Born in 1984 in Geneve, Gabriel Zufferey is the kind of people who grew up in a family full of musicians and music lovers. Two years after his first jazz lessons, he won the “Most promising musician” award at the International competition of Martial Solal jazz piano. One year after, at the age of 15, he won the “Jury special prize “at the Montreux Jazz Festival Piano Solo competition.
His first album was released in 2004 ina trio with drummer Daniel Humair and bassist Sebastien Boisseau. In a day and half, they created Après l’orage, his first album for Bee Jazz records. With eight compositions of Zufferey, three collective improvisations, and two standards; the record is a surprise and won a lot of prizes, like the Must of TSF and four stars in Jazzman and Le monde de la musique.
In 2010 Gabriel Zufferey released his second album, in live with Ramon Lopez (drums), Samuel Blaser (trombone), and Patrice Moret (bass). With Here & Know (still at Bee Jazz), Gabriel brings to the piano an electronic keyboard. When he left for New York, Gabriel discovered a lot of musicians such as Dave Liebman, Ravi Coltrane, Ahmad Jamal, Jeff “Tain” Watts, or Mike Stern.
Back to Switzerland, he found the opportunity to record his first solo album in a village at an altitude of 1 700 m. In such a calm place he could make a meditation and a contemplation of his ten years of career. Surrounded by Pierre-André Georges (tuner), Etienne Métrailler (sound ingeneer), and Renaud Kressmann (his manager for more than 10 years), Gabriel Zufferey has, in three days, extracted the best of this place. He gives us a refined account with a lot of poetry, in harmony with the place where he recorded it: in the mountains, under the stars: Contemplation.
Gabriel has viewed Contemplation as an open letter, a reflexion about his own world and the other’s one. Like an initiatory path leading to his own fulfillment, and beyond: the meeting with others, the more genuine expression, free and invested, the understanding and look beyond prejudice and faults.
Gabriel Zufferey has a delicate and powerful touch, tuneful and thoughtful, and a constant groove. He gets a confidence and a disturbing maturity, a large musical intelligence, and an unsuspected harmonic field. His touch has been connected to some pianists like Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Brad Mehldau or even Bud Powell.
