The Auction Project has just released the followed up to its 2008 maiden effort. I enjoyed the debut, having a soft spot for various jazz-folk-classical fusions. The ensemble — the Bixlers, O’Farrill, Carlo De Rosa, bass, and Vince Cherico, drums– has performed, and that extra experience shows on this newest “Slink,” the first recording on Bixler’s on label. While the first album had that wonderful sense of experimentation, this session has the tight feel of a working band. Bixler’s clear-eyed, probing compositions, traditional Irish fare and Latin jazz underpinnings merge into a distinct whole.
The opener “Bear Island Reel,” arranged like most everything else here by Bixler, opens with an assertive lick…. four grace notes and a three-note descending figure, and then Heather Bixler sounding Finbar Dwyer’s theme. Both Bixler and O’Farrill pick up elements of that opening riff to shape their solos, then to back Cherico’s solo. It ends with the figure and the reel superimposed. Throughout in both the improvising and the ensembles there’s attention to compositional and textural detail. Bixler,who has a master’s in composition, puts that training to work in everything he does. His solos eshew easy riffing, they grow from the material at hand, and even as he draws inspiration from the stuff of his daily life, he remains unsentimental. His bright, metallic sound dissects the compositions whetherhis own — “Slink,” “Cleveland,” “Angry White Man” — or his arrangements of traditional work. O’Farrill feeds into this with conversational comping and solos like dramatic monologues. Cherico and De Rosa pin down the shifting rhythmic currents whether it’s a floating beat with just a touch of the march or full-on funk.
“The Wind That Shakes the Barley” has a place of honor in the session, being both the middle track and the heart of the center. Heather Bixler’s gorgeous violin sets the tone for the multilayered piece. David Bixler spins his solo out of the rhapsodic opening theme. Each phrase an emotional equation that follows with logic and heart to the next. The violin variation leads to an ensemble crescendo that sets the violin aloft over O’Farrill’s roiling piano. He solos then, a dancing line spun out in his right hand over subtle accents from Cherico and De Rosa. The piece sounds like a series of movements, not a succession of choruses.
Heather Bixler’s violin is again in the forefront on “Heron’s Egg” as she plays the jig unaccompanied before her bandmates slip in to join her. That jig launches O’Farrill into free space, reminding the listener that he did time in Carla Bley’s Band. David Bixler picks up the tone with an acerbic tone that climaxes in a series of cries. In an interview a year or so after he arrived in Bowling Green, he said that he was too rooted in the jazz mainstream to fit in with the free crowd, but pushed the boundaries too much for many traditionalists. Clearly it’s a space he’s comfortable in.
The session ends on a lyrical note with Heather Bixler’s haunting air “Workmanship.” Guests Isaac Alderson on uilleann pipes adds to the misty atmosphere and guitarist Mike Stern, one of those BGSU guest artists who rocks out on “Slink,” delivers a gospel-tinged turn that adds another dimension to the wistful mood. The song aptly feels like a goodbye after a visit with friends. (David Dupont)
