Pianists George Shearing, Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner have become better known to the general public than the three men who formed the modern jazz piano style: Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell. Tatum, Monk and Powell influenced every pianist that came after them, but Shearing, Peterson and Garner have larger reputations. They constituted a sub-school of modern piano playing, however they started as swing pianists. They were initially influenced by Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson, and also Art Tatum, before they moved into the new bop movement. Yet Shearing, Peterson and Garner did not firmly commit to the new music: the swing feeling has always remained an important element in their playing. They are rhythmically forceful, they concentrate on popular standards instead of original, more difficult bop tunes, and they frequently present the song's original melody in their performances. Therefore their music is much more accessible to a broad public than the music of Tatum, Monk and Powell and the beboppers.
Shearing, Peterson and Garner all drew wide followings. They built the foundation of the contemporary light jazz piano style that has become central to modern popular music. All around the world pianists in cocktail lounges and nightclubs and on radio broadcasts play music derived from these three pianists. And although there is sometimes a lack of melodical inventiveness and an overrating of rhythmical devices, the music of these men is reliable jazz, that, through its accessibility, has helped to broaden the audience for jazz in general.

Errol Garner (1921-1977) was born in Pittsburgh. His father was a pianist, but the young Garner was more interested in baseball than piano and refused to take lessons. So he never learned to read music and became a completely self-taught musician. By the time he was twelve he worked professionally around Pittsburgh. During World War II he moved to New York where he found steady work on Fifty-second Street. He quickly captured a large audience with groups consisting of Garner himself on the piano, next to a bassist and a drummer, a format Garner retained for the whole of his career. Garner was also a talented composer: the song 'Misty', written in the late fifties, became a big hit and has since become a standard jazz song.
Garner's style is mainly characterized by playing with locked hands and a great many block chords, intermingled with runs of single notes. He tended to play heavily and steadily with his left hand on the beat with close chords, which produced a guitarlike effect. His interpretations of standard songs were orchestral in conception, exploiting the full range of the keyboard, and employing contrasting textures and dynamics in the manner of big-band arrangements. This very individual style has attracted few imitators, because of its virtuoso technique.
This CD contains recording sessions of the Erroll Garner Trio of the years 1945-1947. We hear the great pianist interpreting a selection of fine standard songs, while he also brilliantly performs ten compositions of his own.
