Aside from the name being misspelled on front and back cover, guitarist Charlie (not Charley) Christian was at the forefront of the bebop revolution. These ten tracks show why, and also gives rise to the notion of Christian being the first to wield an amplified electric guitar. The CD has a nice range of bop classics, three written by co-conspirator Dizzy Gillespie, two originals of Christian's, a lone standard, and a tribute to Jack Kerouac. This collection represents not only a smidgen of what Christian did before his career was tragically cut short, but opens a window into his grand contributions to jazz. Though only an appetizer and a bit flawed, it is tasty.

The name of Charlie Christian has a double significance in the jazz world. First and foremost, it symbolizes more than almost any music the transition from hot to "cool" jazz that had such a great impact on modern music. Second, Charlie's name is almost synonymous with the electric guitar, an instrument that was virtually unknown in Jazz until he introduced it.
In July, 1939, after John Hammond heard Charlie in Oklahoma City and arranged for him to join Benny Goodman in New York, he came to the attention of some other jazzmen who had been experimenting with new sounds and new ideas. After hos job with Benny every evening at the Pennsylvania Hotel, Charlie would take his amplifier and instrument up to a dining room at the Hotel Cecil in Harlem. Henry Minton, a former saxophonist, converted the dilapidated room into a club, made the place an open house for musicians, where jam sessions were practically a nightly event.
Jerry Newman, a young jazz fan who used to bring his portable recording machine up to Minton's recalls that Charlie never disappointed his listeners, and if he knew that people were paying attention he really improvised. Some of these moments were captured by Newman on the performances heard in this album.
This was before the days of tape recording, in addition to which the discs from which this CD was dubbed were played many times so that even the original mediocre quality of the recording was further vitiated, but the poor recording is surely not likely to deter anyone who is interested in a backward glance at the vital scene of Harlem, 1941.
