Dizzie Gillespie
Dizzy Gillespie "the next greatest after Satchmo" (Woody Herman) contributed substantially to the historical development of the jazz trumpet. Gillespie set meaningful historical accents through his perptual striving for innovations in harmony and rhythm.
The basis for this effect was set by the achievements of Armstrong and the influence of Eldridge. Gillespie raised the tempo continually, refined his technique and allowed new styles to integrate. This was complemented by perfect accuracy in the higher range. Gillespie also advanced above and beyond his decisive role as trumpeter to become one of the fathers of bebop. The conscious integration of added notes like the flattened fifth shifted the counterpoint. The addition of rhythmically new accented chords and the use of double time al slow tempos also added to this style.
John Birks ("Dizzy") Gillespie was born on the 21 st October 1917 in Cheaw, South Carolina. He was taught on different instruments by his father, an amateur musician, and learned as 14 year old the trombone, at fifteen the trumpet. Gillespie studied harmony and the theory of music at the Institute of Laurinburg and moved in 1935 to Philadelphia, where he played with Frank Fairfax.
Gillespie became the successor of his former precedent Roy Eldridge and toured with this group throughout Europe. After a brief period of freelancing in New York Gillespie decided in 1939 to join the Cab Calloway band, to which he-belonged until 1941. There then followed engagements amongst others with Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter and Fletcher Henderson. Gillespie played in this period alongside Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk at numerous sessions at the Harlem "Minton's Penthouse". He worked on 52nd Street in different line-ups from 1943. amongst them with Charlie Parker with whom he recorded "Blue'n'Boogie" and "Groovin' High". Gillespie became musical director of the Billy Eckstine Ensemble in 1944.
Gillespie's first attempt to form his own big band failed after a short time. He created a new orchestra a year later, and this existed until 1950. Milt Jackson, Ray Brown. James Moody and Kenny Clark belonged to the exceptional soloists. The band were celebrated on numerous internationally-acclaimed tours and climax of this period was the legendary concert at the Carnegie Hall in 29th "September 1947 at which contemporary compositions, amongst them from John Lewis and Tadd Damerons. were played.
Gillespie set up a record publishers in 1951 in Detroit and travelled in the following period mainly with smaller crews. Gillespie played al the unforgettable Massey Hall concert in 1953 in Toronto once again with Parker, with whom he had a life-long friendship. Apart from that Gillespie was the centre of attraction al numerous JATP sessions around the world in the Fifties. He performed concerts in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America with a newly-formed big band between 1956 and 1958. Dizzy Gillespie also acted in the Sixties and Seventies, usually on special occasions, alongside his other activities as bandleader. He travelled to Europe in 1968 with his Reunion Combo, which combined members of the various Gillespie phases. The tendency to prefer smaller line-ups was however predominant. Leo Wright. Candido and Junior Mance and Lalo Schifrin belonged to his most important partners in these combos. The latter enriched the repertoire with the suite "Gillespiana".
Gillespie was also guest star at various sessions and festivals in the Sixties and Seventies, which brought him together with amongst others Benny Carter, Mill Jackson. Roy Eldridge and Clarke ferry. Billy Mitchell organised a "Tribute To Dizzy Gillespie" in 1975 in New York.
"To Be Or Not To Bop", the aptly named title of the memoirs of this highly decorated jazz musician, was released in 1979. He undertook further lours around the world in the Eighties, with changing line-ups, and produced numerous records.
Miles Davis
Born on the 25th May. 1926 in Alton. Illinois. Miles Dewey Jr. Davis was to become in the course of his career the possibly most influential figure in contemporary jazz.
Davis received trumpet lessons al the age of 9. and began to study at the noted "Juillard School of Music" in New York in 1945. He played already in this period with Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Parker, and was band-leader with Kai Winding. Allen Eager and Charlie Parker in 1948. Davis formed his own band the "Capitol Band", a nine-piece with changing line-up. This band went down in jazz history with the recording of "Birth Of The Cool" and "Pre-Birth Of The Cool", and marked the change-over from Bebop to Cool Jazz.
Davis worked at the end of the Fifties with, amongst others. Cannonball Adderley. Bill Evans and John Coltrane. With the recordings "Milestones" and "So What?" Davis developed his improvisation technique further.
The trumpeter experimented in the Sixties - up until the borders of atonality - with new musical forms. He collaborated in this period with Herbie Hancock. Chick Corea and Dave Holland before absolving in the Seventies a further musical turn-around: into electric jazz. The most representative documentation of this change, and at the same time Davis' most commercially successful work, was the 1970 album "Bitches Brew".
In the following years Davis experimented increasingly with rock, funk and free jazz and performed also al various rock festivals. The trumpeter withdrew in 1975 from the scene on the grounds of his extremely poor health and first returned in 1980 when he celebrated his comeback with a newly-formed group. There followed diverse records, amongst others the 1981 album "We Want Miles" and the 1985 album "You're Under Arrest".
Al the end of his career Miles Davis recorded the hip-hop record "Doo-Bop" with the rapper Easy Mo - his last piece of work and further proof that Davis not only decisively influenced the development of jazz over 3 decades but also that he was prepared, right up until the very end, to integrate new directions of music into his work.
Miles Davis died on Ihe 28th September, 1991 during the recording of "Doo-Bop" in Santa Monica, California.
