Artist Biography by Scott Yanow
Old FriendsBob Brookmeyer was long considered one of the top valve trombonists in jazz and a very advanced arranger whose writing was influenced by modern classical music. He started out as a pianist in dance bands but played valve trombone with Stan Getz (1953). He gained fame as a member of the Gerry Mulligan quartet (1954-1957), was part of the unusual Jimmy Giuffre Three of 1957-1958 (which consisted of Giuffre's reeds, Brookmeyer's valve trombone, and Jim Hall's guitar), and then re-joined Mulligan as arranger and occasional player with his Concert Jazz Band. Brookmeyer, who was a strong enough pianist to hold his own on a two-piano date with Bill Evans, occasionally switched to piano with Mulligan. He co-led a part-time quintet with Clark Terry (1961-1966), was an original member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra (1965-1967), and became a busy studio musician. Brookmeyer was fairly inactive during much of the '70s, but made a comeback in the late '70s with some very advanced arrangements for the Mel Lewis band (of which he became musical director for a time). Brookmeyer moved to Europe, where he continually wrote and occasionally recorded on his distinctive valve trombone, issuing Old Friends in 1998. New Works Celebration appeared a year later, and in 2000 he issued Together. Brookmeyer continued to perform and release albums through the next decade, often working with his European big band The New Art Orchestra including 2002's Waltzing with Zoe, 2004's Get Well Soon, and 2007's Spirit Music. In 2008, he explored his deep interest in classical music with Music for String Quartet and Orchestra. He wrote innovative big-band compositions and was highly regarded as a teacher: his classes at the New England Conservatory of Music are the stuff of legend. On December 15, 2011, Brookmeyer died in his sleep at a hospital near his home in Grantham, New Hampshire; the cause was congestive heart failure. He passed just a month after releasing the album Standards via the ArtistShare website, and only three days shy of his 82nd birthday.

AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek
The Bob Brookmeyer volume in the Mosaic Select series is one of the more enlightening issues in that it not only includes his little-known debut quartet sides for Pacific Jazz in 1954, featuring Red Mitchell, but more importantly, brings back into print his classic Traditionalism Revisited, Street Swingers, and Kansas City Revisited albums from 1957 and 1958. These sides in particular showcased Brookmeyer's fantastic compositional and arrangement skills even better than his work with Gerry Mulligan. Some of the players on these sessions include Jimmy Giuffre, Jim Hall, Ralph Pena, Jimmy Raney, Paul Quinichette, and Dave Bailey. Brookmeyer was a complete traditionalist, but an unusual harmonist. His charts extrapolated the essence and melodic purity of the earlier jazz material and read it into the advanced harmonic theories of the day on the West Coast, as well as brought it's "cool" ambience to the proceedings -- whether the tempo was up or down. In addition to this music, there are tracks that first saw the light of day on the Playboy Jazz All Stars compilation, and Brookmeyer's self-titled album on Crown. The Street Swingers disc, in particular, with its quintet setting putting Hall, Raney, and Brookmeyer on the frontline, is a masterpiece. Also from 1958 is the Stretching Out album originally issued on United Artists with Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, as well as Hank Jones, Charlie Persip, and Freddie Green on guitar. This is a smoking, wonderfully up-tempo session full of many colors and textures, and showcases Brookmeyer's charts at his developmental peak. In all, there are the four complete albums, some alternate takes, and compilation sides, making this essential for not only Brookmeyer fans, but West Coast jazz collectors as well.

Although he continues to be a valued jazz artist recording occasionally, the state of Bob Brookmeyer's early catalog until recently was inexplicably in a state of disarray. Of course, we still haven't seen CD reissues of such vintage Verve sides like The Blues, Hot and Cold or the Mercury set Jazz Is a Kick, but things have been looking up since the appearance of this new Select reissue that brings together several choice albums including his previously hard-to-come-by United Artists dates from 1958.
This three-disc set starts with a 1954 Pacific Jazz session that was issued on a 10-inch LP called The Bob Brookmeyer Quartet and has never subsequently been reissued in full until now. Recorded superbly by Rudy Van Gelder, Brookmeyer produced this date himself and while the tunes are nothing fancy, Brookmeyer is up front in dashing form. Even at this early stage in his career, the valve trombonist comes off as a mature soloist with a rich and sonorous timbre that owes as much to the swing heroes of the day as the bebop language that was in vogue at the time.
Filling out the first disc are the half dozen tracks that find Brookmeyer in a unique line-up with guitarists Jim Hall and Jimmy Raney. Released in 1957 on Pacific Jazz as The Street Swingers, this equally rare set not only stands apart due to its unusual front line but for a strong set of originals by Hall, Raney, and Brookmeyer. Hall returns to the fold for Traditionalism Revisited , one of the trombonist's better known items and one that boasts a cool spirit due in no small part to the presence of Jimmy Giuffre. Even swing era ditties like "Jada" and "The Sheik of Araby" sound positively transformed by these forward-thinking talents.
The real meat of this set is to be found in the two 1958 sets that Brookmeyer cut for United Artists which were released and quickly disappeared, making them expensive and highly sought collector's items for many decades now. With a decided Basieish quality, Kansas City Revisited finds Brookmeyer working a small band that boasts a big sound thanks to the efforts of tenor saxophonists Al Cohn and Paul Quinichette. "Doggin' Around," "Moten Swing," and "Jumpin' at the Woodside," come directly from the Count's book but Brookmeyer manages to put something new into these adaptations. Weighing in with his own take on Big Joe Turner and other blues belters who fronted the Basie Band, Clarence "Big" Miller shouts and struts his stuff on "What's On Your Mind" and "Trav'lin' Light."
It's a similar ensemble that our leading man fronts for Stretching Out , but with the addition of Harry 'Sweets' Edison on trumpet and Basieites Freddie Green and Eddie Jones. From the standpoint of the material, this session steps away from the Basie theme, but the music is still of a swinging variety (ranging from "King Porter Stomp" to Bill Potts' "Bee Kay") and we hear more great solo work from Brookmeyer, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Hank Jones, and Brookmeyer himself. Tapping a segment of Brookmeyer's legacy that was all but untouched in modern times, this set is a must-have for fans of the trombonist as well as those who dig the big band sounds.
