Arranged by Bret Zvacek, Harlem Nocturne is a modern version of a classic jazz standard. In this up tempo piece you will hear solos from Jim Butler on alto saxophone and Brandon May on the piano. Towards the end of the piece you will enjoy the tasty and stunning playing of our workhorse lead trumpet player, Nick Ciardelli.
Bye Bye Blues is a wonderful arrangement by the late Rob McConnell featuring Michael Hornbuckle on trombone and Isaac Lamar on tenor saxophone. This piece is a picture of an old man in an easy chair out on his porch, sipping his beverage of choice, telling a story with his bass trombone. He hands off the melody to his friends, the horn section, and they take the story to the next level by means of some seriously crunchy harmony. When the horn section has finished they pass it to old man number two, Isaac Lamar. He tells the story again, in his own words, starting from a whisper and climaxing with a shout from the top of a mountain! Just for fun, the piece then goes into double time rock for a few bars and then we finish with old man Hornbuckle, sitting on his porch telling the story the way it really happened.
My Favorite Things, arranged by Bruce Wermuth, is a great take on another classic musical favorite. The piece features Jim Butler on alto sax and Jim’s musical foil, Jon Ruff, on muted trumpet.
Widow’s Walk by Rick Margitza is a portrait of sadness as the widow of a fallen sailor tells her story. The song comes to life by the melodic playing of Isaac Lamar on tenor sax and Brandon May on piano.
Uba Blues by Mike Rinta. Mike Rinta is one of the most in demand trombonists and arrangers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This piece was commissioned by the band specifically for this recording. This song features Mark Weissman on saxophone and Mike Rinta on trombone.
I Left my Heart in San Francisco, arranged by Quincy Jones. The music speaks for itself. Isaac Lamar on tenor sax.
Foe Destroyer by Chris McQueen. If you have ever wondered what a jazz band would sound like playing art rock, this is it. Featuring Ron Glenn on saxophone and Paul Wells on guitar.
Knarf by Michael Abene, a Maynard Fergusson classic featuring Ron Glenn on saxophone and Ryan Terronez on trombone.
Déjà Vu by Tom Frederickson, didn’t we play this already? Featuring Michael Hornbuckle on trombone and Caleb Brinkley on sax.
America the Beautiful arranged by Bob Curnow. What a better way to end an album!
