Artist information
Kato Hideki
Composer, bass player and vocalist Kato Hideki has lived in New York since 1992. Besides playing and recording with some of the best musicians
in the New York music scene, he has focused on his own work. In 1994 he released the cd "Karada wa Oto o Dasu Mono" with his own group, Bass Army,
and did a solo tour of Europe.
Kato intersperses composition and improvisation, integrating acoustic and electric bass with language, analog and digital processed sounds.
The result is an interaction between prepared material and organic chance. His pieces resemble the unpredictability of life itself: alternating between
intent and impulse, order and chaos, silence and sound.
His work with other artists include the recently completed "Death Ambient" with Ikue Mori and Fred Frith; a CD-ROM "Headless Beast" with Keitaro Terasaki;
and composing the music for the Irondale Ensemble production of August Strindberg's "Ghost Sonata."
As a bass player Kato appears on discs from Tenko, Ikue Mori, Ground-Zero, David Shea, Koichi Makigami, Samm Bennett, John King and Peril.
He has performed with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Marc Ribot, Nana Vasconcelos, Zeena Parkins, Christian Marclay, Anthony Coleman, Arto Lindsay,
Dougie Bowne, Sim Cain, David Moss, Charles Hayward, Kramer, Yamatsuka Eye, Haino Keiji, Isso Yukihiro and others.
He was selected for 1993 Artist-in-residence program at Harvestworks in New York. In 1992 he was a co-recipient of a grant from the Australia Council,
and participated in a tour of Australia and Japan with the group Peril.

Release Information
The original inspiration was black & white photography.
KATO explains this: "Physically photos don't have time in terms of actual movement. But I feel good pictures have a sense of time, even though they don't move like films.
While you are looking at the pictures, they have their own lives. I believe this is the beauty of photography." The title came from a quote by the photographer Robert Frank,
who said, "Black and white is the vision of hope and despair."
Further inspiration came from the concept of time in music from the Eastern cultures. KATO chose to utilize the form of Japanese Noh theater for "Hope & Despair".
Noh has a particular structure consisting of Jo (introduction), Ha (break) and Kyu (fast). In the beginning, the action moves very slowly. It is said, "one step is a thousand miles."
Then comes a sudden movement, completely out of context with the introduction. Next, all of the action occurs very quickly, and finally, the piece ends abruptly.
KATO explains how this came to be a part of "Hope & Despair" : "I have been influenced by this culture, and so I abstractly imported this concept into my music.
Indeed it is demanding for an audience to pay such close attention, to watch what is happening during every single second of the performance.
But when you do so, you can actually feel the expansion of time. The more attention you pay, the greater the impression."
