JazzTimes: Reviews is the final installment of composer Klaus König's cycle of five suites for orchestra and, occasionally, voices. It's a big surpise, given his previous four suites. On each, König's command of jazz' s various sub-genres and hybrids was thoroughly impressive, whether he lovingly illuminated them from within or impishly stretched them almost beyond recognition. While all the suites are durable, substantial works, The Song Of Songs approached masterpiece-dom, as it placed a timeless text into a score packed with dramatically charged themes, memorable songs, and thrilling choruses. Even when he played off the whimsical texts of Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy), König's works possessed a rare gravity.
In comparison, Reviews, sub-titled A Revue for Frank Zappa, is merely clever. Its conceit is this: König cut and pasted texts from reviews generated by the first four suites to create a libretto that lampoons critics' verbosity. It's enough for a very satisfying first listening. As the narrator, David Moss' FZ-tinged monologues have just the right smarminess. The other roles, sung by The Bobs, split the difference between the lacquered sheen of Ray Collins and the uncorked lunacy of Flo and Eddie. Throughout the program, there are radiant absurdities that reinforce the Zappa tie-in, such as the sophomorically smutty blues, "Tuba Boons."... In the end, Klaus König emerges as a more intriguing composer for having written Reviews. The premise is provocative, the music frequently exciting and the text is at times side-splitting. Though it doesn't have the staying power of most of his earlier suites, Reviews is perhaps the most daring work to date. - Bill Shoemaker, September 1996
MUSICA JAZZ: Come definire questa nuova fatica di Klaus König? Direi "opera swing" per una serie di motivi: il ritmo dondolante (più or meno veloce) sul quale poggia quasi per intero: lo scintillio degli ottoni paragonabile a quello delle orchestre di Woody Herman; l'irresitible quartetto vocale The Bobs che sembra una caricatura dei Manhattan Transfer; e via dicendo. Ma la dedica a Frank Zappa indica già che Reviews va a parare ad un alto tasso di invenzione e di sarcasmo. Dunque, questo lavoro è l'ultima parte di un ciclo de cinque suite -come le definisce König - tutte pubblicate dalla ENJA, e ha una caratteristica che lo contraddistingue: i testi, infatti, sono realizzati con brandelli di recensioni che le quattro suite precedenti hanno raccolto...Allora, per dirla in poche parole, Reviews è un esempio di rara, sana, creativa follia quale non ascoltavamo dall'epoca gloriosa del jazz olandese (Breuker, Bennink ecc.). Così ridotte a brandelli, le frasi dei colleghi che recensirono i quattro lavori precedenti non si sa se appaiono pìu insulse o pìu ridicole ( ed è con un certo imbarazzo che adesso sto scrivendo). Ma per passare a la musica: pìu che nella composizione e nell'arrangiamente, le scelte di König si revelano vincenti sopratutto riguardo agli interpreti, tutti musicisti dotati di une preparazione che consente loro di muoversi nell' ortodossia del jazz ma anche di rovesciarla imprevedibilmente nel grotesco. Sotto questo aspetto il disco ( che come una vera opera è corredata dal libretto) è da non perdere per la spettacolare performance dei cantanti, davvero capaci di tutto sul piano sonoro, e del narrator David Moss, dotato di quella vulcanica verve che generalmente si ascolta nei cartoni animati ( in Avantgarde Noise Pollution è davvero impressionante). A loro si aggiungono solisti del calibro do Wollie Kaiser, Michel Massot, Ray Anderson, Reiner Winterschaden, e un Gerry Hemingway la cui batteria è una specie di caldaia che fa marciare a spron battuto l'intera orchestra.
