The highly distinctive French drummer who has left his mark on the recordings of Peter Gabriel and Sting among others is building a strong catalogue of approachable jazz albums. He has recently switched independent German labels so new to the racks and online shops we have a limited edition compilation of tracks from his four ECM releases, as well as a live album from his new label, ACT.
Katché started his ECM recordings very strongly indeed in 2004 with Neighbourhood. At first glance that might have been because he had a celebrity frontline in Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, but after repeated listens I came to the conclusion that his real masterstroke had been in his choice of Stanko’s pianist and bassist at the time, Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz.
For his second ECM disc, Playground, in ’07, he kept Wasilewski and Kurkiewicz but changed trumpet and saxophone to two younger Norwegian players, Mathias Eick and Trygve Seim. In the process he struck gold as far as I was concerned. The opener on Touchstone for Manu is this band’s Song For Her, with a solo piano intro than still reveals new gorgeous facets and the ultimate in cool grooves. It is also an example of the way Katche favoured sensitive ensemble playing to extensive soloing.

Third Round, in 2009, changed the band completely. In came saxophonist Tore Brunborg, who has stayed with him ever since, trumpet was exchanged for guitar with another ECM leader, Jacob Young, behind it, the piano role was filled with fellow Sting band member Jason Rebello, and bassist of choice for everyone from John Mayer to Adele, Pino Palladino, completed the line-up. The players might have changed but the mood and general abundance of melody, groove and impeccable musicianship continued.
With the eponymous fourth album, the quintet became a quartet, Jim Watson adding bass parts on the Hammond B3 and also playing piano, trumpet now restored in the eminent personage of Nils Petter Molvaer, alongside Brunborg. It was still great stuff but for me the character that marked Playground in particular had started to become a little diluted. Manu Katché is a pleasant album but not one that I return to quite so often.
All are equally dipped into on this “best of” disc.
The new live ACT album was recorded at New Morning in Paris, with the band substantially the same as the last ECM disc, the one change being Italian trumpeter Luca Aquino in for Molvaer, and the set list chosen mainly from the last three ECMs.
What sets this disc apart is its live nature and the way the music is let loose, the drama heightened, the manner considerably hotter, the rhythms a lot more urgent. The single overlap with the ECM compilation is Song For Her, which provides a nice point of comparison. Watson’s solo intro is pretty but it doesn’t have the depth of Wasilewski’s, the magical matching of Eick and Seim is not there in Aquino and Brunborg, able as they are, and even Manu himself isn’t on quite the same form. Maybe that earlier atmosphere in the Avatar studios in New York is impossible to reimagine.
The virtues of Live In Concert are in the much more upfront warmth of the affair. The presence of Hammond enriches the greasiness and tastiness of what is served up, and Katche is a marvellously subtle pusher of the beat and of his playing partners. Brunborg is especially spurred to some pretty explosive heights – try his tenor solo on Clubbing, for a prime example. There is also a marvellous drum solo from the leader.
I’m not too happy with the recording quality – it’s balanced but a little harsh at times, and does Brunborg no favours when he is in full cry on soprano. It also sometimes muddles Manu’s cymbals. However, if you like this band in the studio, you’ll enjoy this more vividly coloured example of their work. On the other hand, if you are coming fresh to the Katché band via the live album and want to hear what led to up to it, the ECM compilation – or indeed the individual discs – will be well worth investigating.
