Hugh Brooker’s Night Trains were signed to Acid Jazz & BGP Beat Goes Public.
Many of their releases had hip-hop leanings featuring cartoon cut-ups, breaks, cinema samples & scratching.
Here is Miles Away taken from the Checkmate LP released on BGP – a track constructed from a trumpet solo (Miles) and some programming – simple & effective.
The best Acid Jazz is laid back enough to help you chill after a late night partying/clubbing, but dynamic and hip enough to keep you interested. By this standard Miles Away succeeds well with its mid-tempo collection of tight, clean jams filled with complex rhythms and instrumentation. Marcia Johnson's clear vocals (reminiscent of N'dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies) are prominently featured on tracks 2, 7 and 10; some of the strongest on the album.
The second track, Love Sick (released as a single in the UK) is cool and slick, and probably the most radio-friendly song on the CD. Other favorites include Dig The Dog with its lilting flute and easy summer-like beat, and the title track which conjures up it own syncopated yet subdued urban soundscape. Most of the tracks here manage to distinguish themselves from the more straight ahead Acid Jazz, and bear up to repeated listening.
For Acid Jazz newbies I would recommend The Best Of Acid Jazz, The Best Of Acid Jazz Volume 2 and this album to get your feet wet. For a really fantastic single, listen to Night Train's Bad Trip (off their hard to find 1992 album Loaded or This Is Acid Jazz Volume 4). Other great tracks by similar artists include Lebanese Blond by Thievery Corporation and Upa, Neguinho by United Future Organization.
