1. Young Miles & Birth of the Cool (1945-1950)

Майлз Дэвис, как и многие другие великие музыканты, начал с «поклонения и служения» – его мастером был Чарли Паркер, один из создателей стиля «Bebop». В середине сороковых годов двадцатилетний Майлз явно был в тени авторитетного музыкального гения Паркера с одной стороны, и головокружительной техники и импровизационного блеска Диззи Гиллеспи – с другой. На записях с «Бёрдом» Паркером Майлз часто лишь поддерживает голоса облигато на втором плане. Следовать на трубе за Диззи и его непосредственными преемниками –молодыми, рано умершими бопперами Фэтсом Наварро и Клиффордом Брауном – Майлзу было не под силу. Кто знает – может быть, это обстоятельство было не последним в развитии лаконичного, даже несколько минималистичного стиля и принципиально новой джазовой фразировки, благодаря которым Майлз вскоре прославился на весь мир.
Впрочем, в тени Майлз оставался недолго. Уже в 1948-49 годах он берёт на себя роль лидера. Вместе с Гилом Эвансом, аранжировщиком оркестра Клода Торнхилла, он собирает необычный для джаза состав – нонет, помимо трубы, саксофонов и ритм–группы включающий в себя ещё валторну и тубу. 2. Hard Bop and the Blue Period (1951–1956)

Записи нонета 48-49 годов были выпущены лишь в 1956 году под названием «Birth of the Cool», когда стиль «кул» получил мощнейшее распространение благодаря целому ряду белых джазменов западного побережья США (Стэн Гетц, Чет Бэйкер, Джерри Маллиган и др.) Сам же Дэвис после роспуска нонета в 1950 году хоть и не оставляет кул полностью, но всё больше и больше возвращается к «чёрным» корням джаза – играя с Сонни Роллинсом, Хорасом Силвером и другими, он прикладывает руку к становлению нового стиля – «Hard–bop». «Боп» в этом случае уходит корнями не только в Диззи и Бёрда, но и в Телониуса Монка – нарочито угловатого, скупого на внешние красивости, невероятно экспрессивного «серого кардинала» стиля бибоп. «Хард» относится к более жёсткой, пряной, «чёрной» ритмической и мелодической структуре, многое заимствующей из городского блюза, госпел, ритм-энд-блюз.

3. 1st Great Quintet\Sextet + Kind of Blue + Collaboration with Gil Evans (1955–1963)

В 1955 году Майлз ушёл с лэйбла «Prestige» и подписал новый контракт с компанией «Columbia Records», для которой он будет записываться следующие тридцать лет. Запись «Milestones» в 1958 году положила начало поискам Дэвиса в области модальной музыки, уводя ипровизацию от гармонических последовательностей в сторону ладотональности. Огромное впечатление на Майлза произвёл молодой Билл Эванс – белый пианист с классическим образованием. Эванс занимает место Гарланда в составе, а на смену Филли Джо Джонсу приходит Джимми Кобб.
