Originally released in 1960 as BST84047 this is a K. Grey & S. Hoffman remaster.
Since his days with the Bud Powell Trio, drummer Art Taylor was an invaluable member of the Blue Note recording family. A.T.’s Delight is the only album made under his own name for the label & it is a remarkable one. Choosing great compositions by Coltrane, Monk, Denzil Best & Kenny Dorham, Taylor assembled a great quintet fronted by Dave Burns & Stanley Turrentine, often adding Potato’s congas to the proceedings. The unique & varied arrangements & great playing pay tribute to the drummer’s exceptional song selection.

Although Art Taylor was 1 of the busiest modern 2nd-generation jazz drummers, working in the studio with Coleman Hawkins, Donald Byrd, John Coltrane & many others, he only released 5 albums under his own name, of which A.T.’s Delight was the 3rd. And a delight it is indeed, bright & percussive, & when conga player Carlos “Patato” Valdes joins Taylor & pianist Wynton Kelly & bassist Paul Chambers on 3 cuts (Thelonious Monk’s “Epistrophy,” “Move” & a Taylor calypso-inflected original called “Cookoo & Fungi”), the rhythm pocket opens into a deep blue sea for the horn men (Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax & Dave Burns on trumpet). “Move” does exactly that, it moves, & at a blistering pace. Monk’s “Epistrophy,” thanks in part to Valdes, reveals its rumba roots, & has never sounded brighter. The seldom-covered Coltrane composition “Syeeda’s Song Flute” seems likewise refreshed & revived. The lone Taylor original, the driving “Cookoo & Fungi,” is as sharp & alert is a kitten waking from a nap in the spring sun, & Taylor’s drum solo is crisp, efficient & slides seamlessly into the calypso-informed main theme. A.T.’s Delight is a solid outing, with a wonderfully nervous but completely focused energy.
