JazzTimesLast year, Dutch vocalist Fay Claassen and arranger Michael Abene practiced the musical voodoo that they do so well across 11 Cole Porter tunes. Now the dynamic duo is back, this time paying vibrant tribute to a spectrum of female singers stretching from Ella to Björk.For the Porter set, it was just Claassen and a three-member rhythm section. For Sing! the personnel includes more than 100, with pianist Frank Chastenier, bassist John Goldsby, guitarist Paul Shigihara and drummer Hans Dekker (the sole holdover from the Porter album) augmented by the WDR Big Band Cologne and WDR Rundfunkorchester, all conducted by Abene. It might be expected, due to the population explosion, that Abene’s arrangements would take fewer twists and turns, yet they remain masterfully dynamic. Again, Claassen hugs Abene’s curves like a kunstbahn luger, riding bop and scat lines with rare expertise and confirming the obvious: that she remains one of Europe’s, if not the world’s, preeminent stylists.As for the dozen tracks, praising one over another is a fool’s gambit. From the sassy swing of Betty Carter’s “Tight” to the sax-driven bounce of Joni Mitchell’s “Be Cool” and dense majesty of Miriam Makeba’s “Umhome,” each is a distinctly, ideally shaped gem. It is, though, fair to suggest that Abene’s incomparable re-harmonization skills reach a new peak on a dazzlingly deconstructed “Tea for Two” that honoree Anita O’Day would have enthusiastically applauded. ~ Christopher Loudon
GuardianThe most technically flawless jazz singer is not necessarily the best, but Holland's Fay Claassen's virtuosity comes with a kind of built-in euphoria that demolishes resistance. Her accuracy of pitch and timing are phenomenal, she swings to perfection and never resorts to mannerisms. Here, she is accompanied by the WDR radio big band, of Cologne, one of the world's best, containing the pick of Europe's jazz soloists. On three tracks, she has the station's symphony orchestra, just for a change. Michael Abene's arrangements are a joy throughout. ~ Dave Gelly
AMGThe sixth CD for Dutch jazz vocalist Fay Claassen teams her with vaunted arranger Michael Abene and the vaunted WDR Big Band-Cologne. They do a collection of standards, covers of pop tunes, Brazilian music, straight-ahead jazz, and ballads. What is remarkable for this team is the way Abene's charts work in consistent counterpoint with Claassen's lyrics, as if they are deep in close-up conversation. But even more than the give and take of vocalist vis-a-vis the instrumental component, Claassen's singing is outstanding in subtle, less demonstrative ways. When she interprets Betty Carter's famous tune "Tight" with a slight Billie Holiday tinge or a light bossa take of Abbey Lincoln's "Throw It Away," she changes the music while making it her own, sans excess. It's that distinction with a difference -- but not over the top -- that brands Claassen a class act. She's also stretching beyond just covering jazz standards, interpreting songs by such diverse writers as Louis Jordan, Miriam Makeba, Joni Mitchell, and Bjork. Perhaps still obscure worldwide, Fay Claassen remains one of the very best singers in Europe, influenced by music on American shores. ~ Michael G. Nastos
Что-то поднадоели эксперименты, авангардизм и тому подобное... душа захотела чего-нибудь добротно-классического - и нашла голландскую Фею!Фэй Клаассен - джазовая вокалистка из Нидерландов, родилась 2 декабря 1969 года в Неймегене. В юности занималась балетом, затем посещала актерские курсы и лишь после этого обратилась к пению. Фэй закончила Королевскую консерваторию Гааги (1997), сперва она выступала в составе различных групп ('The Tony Overwater V-Group', 'The Amsterdam Jazz Quintet'), затем начала сольную карьеру. В 1999 году увидел свет первый альбом "With a Song in My Heart", спустя два года Клаассен уехала в Нью-Йорк и там был записан "Rhythms & Rhymes" с Mike Stern, Kenny Werner и Toots Thielemans.
