Description
Often cited as the world's true "romance crooner" and proponent of all things love, legendary jazz balladeer Steve Tyrell will release his new collection, I'll Take Romance, which features 12 tracks with Tyrell, backed by his band along with a String Orchestra. The release of I'll Take Romance will be accompanied by tour dates across the country, including his annual seven week run at New York City's legendary Café Carlyle, where he replaced Manhattan icon Bobby Short seven years ago. A passionate song selection that is indeed perfect for Valentine's Day and beyond, Steve Tyrell's I'll Take Romance is a modern-day take on all things love.
Inspired by Chelsea Clinton's choice of his version of "The Way You Look Tonight" for the first dance at her wedding (as told to Tyrell at last year's Café Carlyle engagement by proud Papa Bill Clinton), Tyrell then decided that his next studio recording should be an album consisting purely of romantic standards- an homage to The Great American Songbook with tracks culled from several genres expressing the theme of romance. Featuring such gems as "That's All," "Taking a Chance On Love," "All of You" and the title track, Tyrell also covers a host of R&B classics, including the Etta James hits "At Last" and "Trust In Me;" Sam Cooke's "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons;" and Little Willie John's "Talk to Me."

I'll Take Romance finds Tyrell dialing back the soul and turning the romance up to a nice simmer as a musical happy place is found somewhere between the Great American Songbook and some forgotten R&B standards that are sure to cut a sweeping and incredibly favorable path through a diverse audience. The musical variety is kept in perfect check. As the affairs of the heart are revisited through song there is a delightful ebb and flow that begins to permeate this stellar release as I'll Take Romance begins to develop a unique sonic pulse. There are numerous potentially self indulgent musical trip wires that could easily be found on a similar release by an artist of lesser skill but Tyrell is not attempting to do a riff on Sinatra or Martin. Steve Tyrell is simply doing a riff on Steve Tyrell and here is where the releases pays off well.
"At Last" is the epitome of style, grace and class personified. Tyrell makes old school become new cool with a version of "At Last" that will pass any jazz litmus test for vocalists. "That's All" while in the same musical vein as "At Last"continues to be the standard bearer that most vocalists can only aspire to. Elegance simply does not go out of style as is proven with Tyrell's take on (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons. Perhaps one of the real surprises of the release is the duet with Judith Hill on "I'll Take Romance." Hill's blues infused tone is a perfect match for Tyrell, combine phrasing along with a subtle yet smoldering swing then you have a brand new standard. The true measure of an artist is to take the work of another and place your own indelible mark on the tune without disrespecting either yourself or the original artist. As usual, Tyrell succeeds at will here.
Does Steve Tyrell cut any new musical ground here? Not really. Does he need to? No. Reinventing the musical wheel has never been Steve Tyrell's bag nor does it need to be. Tyrell is not just a singer and has moved well past the tag of vocalist. Steve Tyrell is one of the top flight vocal story tellers of our time. I'll Take Romance is simply Steve Tyrell taking a good thing and making it even better.
5 Huge Stars. One of the most entertaining releases across any genre for 2012.

Though the so-called Great American Songbook is an amazingly diverse and deep collection, one might think Steve Tyrell has pretty well crooned his way through from cover to cover over the course of some eight previous recordings. There are still gems to be found, though, and with I’ll Take Romance, Tyrell delivers another classy collection of timeless standards interspersed with a few newer compositions.
It’s an apt choice of titles, to be sure; Tyrell is a romantic’s romantic, his just-slightly-craggy voice possessed of a natural and easy-going warmth. He may not be the most technically precise singer around, but there’s a just-between-us quality that renders each tune an intimate and personal performance, as though Tyrell is singing, not to a crowd but to each and every individual listener. Add impeccable production and sympathetic support from an utterly immaculate orchestra, and the results are the perfect prelude to passion.
The material is primarily familiar fare, from a cover of “At Last” that kicks things off, to a lush “The Way You Look Tonight” that closes out the collection. In between there’s the title track (featuring guest vocalist Judith Hill) and “I Love You For Sentimental Reasons,” while Tyrell looks to prolific contemporary composers Barry Mann and Cynthia Well for “You Turn Me Around” and “Don’t Know Much,” as well as David Foster (“A Love That Will Last”). The newer songs are arguably not quite up to the standards of the ‘standards’ – the melodies don’t quite capture that timeless quality – but they fit seamlessly into the playlist, and there’s a pleasing consistency throughout.
Tyrell comes across as the penultimate "wedding singer" – there’s a story there, and he definitely deserves the title – and here he sings the ultimate "wedding song," the iconic “At Last.” True, no one will ever touch the Etta James version – one of the most emotionally raw performances of all time. To his credit, Tyrell doesn’t even try to match the drama, instead opting for an easy going version that arguably renders the song in a more romantic fashion – there’s no hurt, no pain behind the words in his version, and as a result the song’s promise seems a little more certain.
Arrangements by Bob Mann are superb and sumptuous without being syrupy, a shimmery curtain of strings supporting most tracks, with just enough jazzy propulsion on jauntier fare (“Takin’ A Chance On Love”), though proceedings remain firmly romantic rather than frantic. When things do swing, it’s gently. There’s creamy-smooth sax and bits of bright, cheery harmonica, and while there’s nothing edgy or adventurous about the project – it's an object lesson in restrained good taste – it doesn’t get much better than this.
Tyrell‘s a late bloomer – his first recording came out when he was 54 – but his voice has aged magnificently, and he may well be the best pure romantic singer on the planet. An absolutely enchanting collection, I’ll Take Romance is nothing short of superb. ~ John Taylor
Стив Мартин) песня "The Way You Look Tonight", которая стала чрезвычайно популярной, подтолкнула Тайрелла в направлении сцены. В итоге, в 54 года он записал дебютный альбом "A New Standard" (1999), два года пребывавший в Billboard Jazz Charts (поднимался в Тор5, как и все последующие семь дисков музыканта, включая представленный).
