Biography by Allmusic
Had Claire Martin become a trumpeter instead of a singer, she would have been compared to Miles Davis and Chet Baker rather than Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, or Lee Morgan. Or as an alto saxophonist, she would have had more in common with Lee Konitz and Paul Desmond than Jackie McLean, Phil Woods, or Gene Quill. Greatly influenced by the cool-school singers of the 1950s, the young British diva clearly owes an artistic debt to such greats as Chris Connor, June Christy, and Julie London -- all of whom, like Martin, favored subtlety and restraint over aggression. But her inspirations don't stop there -- born in London in 1967 and raised in a rock & roll era, the smoky, seductive Martin has also been influenced by contemporary singers ranging from Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush.
Martin was only six when she entered theatrical school, and by her early teens, had been named Best Solo Vocalist twice by the British Arts Awards. Before debuting at Ronnie Scott's in London at 21, Martin supported herself as everything from a singing waitress to a secretary. Martin went on to become one of England's top jazz vocalists, and the British Jazz Awards exalted her as Best New Jazz Artist of 1994 and Best Jazz Singer of 1995. However, she was little known in the U.S. as of late 1996. In October 1996, she visited New York and recorded with American jazz players for the first time, including alto saxophonist Antonio Hart.

Review by Alex Henderson
Many jazz singers young and old make the mistake of arbitrarily avoiding the pop, rock, and R&B songs of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, but for Claire Martin they're fair game. This outstanding CD finds her demonstrating the jazz potential in such unlikely vehicles as Rupert Holmes' incisive "Partners in Crime" and Tom Waits' "Old Boyfriends" -- not exactly songs jazz singers are usually quick to embrace. True to form, she unearths her share of wrongly neglected classics, including Artie Shaw's "Moon Ray" (a major hit for him during the swing era) and Burt Bacharach's "Out of My Continental Mind" (associated with Lena Horne). As daring as Martin is in her choice of material, her vocal style is actually quite straightforward and lucid and not overly abstract. Martin consistently uses subtlety and restraint to maximum advantage and -- like Chris Connor and Julie London before her -- makes it clear that cool jazz certainly doesn't have to be cold.

Review by Observer
Among British jazz singers, Claire Martin has occupied a self-defined middle ground - without surrendering to traditional delivery of the Great American Songbook, but also without investigating the more idiomatically and technically unorthodox territories traversed by Norma Winstone. Martin is, however, a superbly-equipped orthodox jazz singer with a refreshing absence or mannerisms, a knack for sidestepping sentimentality and a jazz instrumentalist's inventiveness and swing. This is her most ambitious disc, even though the Songbook style dominates it, the jazz arrangements really fizz. Pianist Gareth Williams delivers storming solos throughout, and though you may not care for Rodney Bennett's diaphanously romantic strings on When I Fall In Love, Martin's depp purr on it must be one of the song's best-ever interpretations. Conventional material maybe, but skilfully and intelligently reworked. To be original without sounding outlandish or just plain dotty is a difficult trick to bring off, especially for singers but Claire Martin has always managed it with grace and poise. Part of the secret lies in the trust she places in the musicians, and in the mutual inspiration that flows from it. Her occasional pas de deux with saxophonist Nigel Hitchcock provide some of the best moments here. The 13 songs range from Leonard Bernstein to Joni Mitchell and include a couple if specially written pieces by Joel Siegel and Geoff Keezer. Two songs have beautifully unsentimental string arrangements by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett.

Review from Amazon
Claire Martin celebrates her jazz roots with a splendid line-up of some of Britain’s top jazz talents. Produced by Richard Cottle, "Secret Love" features Nigel Hitchcock, Gareth Williams, Laurence Cottle and Clark Tracey. Special guest artists include the much acclaimed guitarist Jim Mullen who features in a duet with Claire Martin on the track Where Do You Start; Sir Richard Rodney Bennett plays piano on My Buddy which Claire dedicates to her friend, the late, Joel Siegel. Sir Richard has championed Claire’s work since her debut "The Waiting Game". Ian Shaw adds his special touch to the vocals on the Costello/Bacharach track God Give Me Strength and Michael Franks’s hip Jive.
