Об альбоме (сборнике)
The success of the musical inventiveness of the U-MAN Trio lies above all in the clearness of the playful interconnections and harmonious understanding between the three instruments, crucial features which have been a constant of the piano-bass-drums trio ever since it was established by Bill Evans – the pioneer and the most authoritative exponent of this particular formation.
To this must be added a truly enviable facility of melodic creation, a component that is not always present in music nowadays. The themes are all, or nearly all, eminently singable, without ever lapsing into the obvious or the banal, largely thanks to a seamless integration of the melody with some extremely refined rhythmic and harmonic solutions. Perhaps the main merit of this record is its will to communicate, without denying tradition in any way, while using it as the driving force for developing a more contemporary language.
The sense of concord between the three musicians is remarkable, but this could hardly be otherwise in a line-up that is one of the most difficult to propose today, because of the many illustrious and much acclaimed comparisons that come to mind in the case of a trio of this kind. But the results that Gaia Possenti, Fabrizio Cecca and Massimo Carrano attain are totally equal to the best historic performances of the greatest exponents of jazz.
The tracks on the CD are mostly original compositions, apart from two well-known standards: My Favourite Things and In a Sentimental Mood, of which there are particularly celebrated versions by John Coltrane in the case of the first, and by Duke Ellington as well as a host of other musicians in the case of the second. The re-interpretation of My Favourite Things in five-eighths instead of the original triple time, with a left-hand riff on the piano that is often doubled by the bass, gives the track an unusually dark sound, which is very far from the radically modal aspects of Coltrane’s famous version and from the brightness of the original song from the musical The Sound of Music. In a Sentimental Mood is dedicated to Michel Petrucciani. In Gaia’s poignant introduction we hints of Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess), as a tribute to the late great pianist, but the piece then leads to a swinging exposition with a development in a medium tempo.
The original tracks (five by Possenti, two by Cecca and one by Carrano) all have very well defined atmospheres. There is a tango with moving nuances, a classic ballad, an orthodox jazz piece, and a tribute to Latin America that gives ample room to the enthralling rhythms of Massimo Carrano. An excellent all-round percussionist, here he displays his outstanding ability on the drums and his particular sensibility to nuances of timbre. Fabrizio Cecca constructs his solos upon the satisfyingly full and rich sound of the double-bass and he makes the most of the melodic possibilities of the instrument with great sensitivity, while Gaia Possenti on the piano makes intelligent use of her stylistic reference points, which range from Lyle Mays to Brad Mehldau (also including the special musical vision of Egberto Gismonti). She departs from them just enough to devise an original musical language of her own that is lyrical and poetic but also playful and ironic.
In conclusion, Infant Speech is a refined journey into the world of jazz, the music that excites and inspires us the most.
