The New England Conservatory of Music Он принимает участие в записи альбомов 'The Rippingtons', Chuck Loeb, Patti Austin, Tom Browne, и 'The GRP All-Star Big Band'.

I can't say enough good things about Nelson Rangell. This is one of his best. I also recommend Yes Then Yes, Truest Heart, and self-named Nelson Rangell. But I'm a diehard fan, so in my opinion, you can't go wrong with any of his work. Always intense and melodic.
Review by Bruno (Niteroi, RJ Brazil) : Amazon
This very fine title, though not his best, is a good sample of Nelson's skill and diversity, both on saxophone and flute. Best songs are the title song "Playing For Keeps", the feeling song "From one to Another" and "Ten Worlds", this last one with a stunning alto sax solo at 3min 37sec, the best moment of this great title.

Review by Jonathan Widran
While most instrumental artists are content to find a niche by developing their chops on a single instrument and creating one distinctive sound, Nelson Rangell always felt that doing so would shortchange the listening public of his musical diversity. His second GRP release features various styles and such wind instruments as alto and soprano sax, piccolo, and flute. While a first listen to this dynamic disc might confuse listeners previously unfamiliar with his happy schizophrenia, the one undeniable consistency is the passion and excitement he infuses throughout, on party jams like "Givin' the High Sign" and also on more heartfelt fare along the lines of Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss." While a funky Sanborn influence is quite apparent on Rangell's alto work and the Hubert Laws approach suits him on the flute (allowing for a familiar if not wholly distinctive comfort zone), the real stunning selection is a cover of Pat Metheny's "If I Could," on which Rangell carries the melody by whistling. Though his modulations are brilliant, he never attempted such a feat again. His work throughout the next decade+ continued to show development in all these various areas.

I stumbled on Nelsons music while in a music store in Denver, and I've been addicted every since. His music has personality and touches your ever emotion.
Review by Bruno (Niteroi, RJ Brazil) :: Amazon
Truest Heart is probably the best of Nelson Rangell's titles in which the multi-talented player shows his awesome proficiency on all his instruments. Although the David Sanborn background is obvious on Rangell, the saxman proves he can be really unique in his style and as addicting as Sanborn himself. Chuck Loeb's masterpiece "World Traveler" is by far the best song of this title, followed by "Truest Heart" and "Western Vogue". On "Sierra La Esperanza" it becomes evident that Nelson sounds as good on tenor as he does on alto sax. For those into the flute and piccolo, "Flight" and "Regatta de Rio" (a bit of the brazillian Samba, thank you Nelson and Mark Portmann) are worth it. In fact, almost all songs of this title are great. For sure Nelson Rangell's best.

Review by Mr. Music Critic (Georgia) :: Amazon
In the early to mid 90's GRP records had contracted with several up and coming musicians and bands. Not the least of which was Nelson Rangell. He is a superb soprano, alto, and tenor sax player. He also can play the flute and piccolo. The title track maybe the best one on this. Looking foward... is a good song too. This features his soprano sax playing. Never Forgotten... is another wonderful track. Love Is... sounds like a remake to me, but there isn't really any fillers on this CD. Star Stream is a dreamy, yet jazzy song. Swinging For The Fence is a techno-jazz style song. He sounds a lot like David Sandborn on this one! One Heart Calling is sad and a long song, that has a Latin style to it. The Runaround will awaken you if you happened to drift off during the last song. This one sounds a lot like the Rippington's and no wonder...because Mark Portmann and Tony Morales (both of which have been part of the Rippingtons) are featured on it. They along with Chuck Loeb are an integral part of this CD. Chuck also produced a good part of it. Child's Play is another song in which Nelson plays the flute and piccolo. I really like this one. The last track Time Will Tell is a fitting ending to a CD in which you must just say yes, to!!!
Review by C. J. "CJ "cruizerman"" (Australia) :: Amazon
Yes it's funky, and yes it's jazzy sophisticated music, uplifting to the soul and great party music as well. Nelson has one of the best sounds on the alto sax, and knows how to make it sing.
As nice as the music is, there is nothing particularly special, or of any significance here, just a great collection of songs with good sound quality. The sleeve has three full-page photos of Nelson, and is crammed full of credits and thank yous to just about anyone who has a name.
Then yes, Nelson is a happening musician who definitely deserves prominence by the sound of his playing. Yes whack this into your CD player nice and loud, and enjoy some genuinely good happy instrumental music. Very refreshing to come across an artist like Nelson Rangell.

Review by Matthew J. Archuleta (DENVER, CO USA) :: Amazon
I give this album a 5 star rating because the playing is phenomenally exceptional. Nelson lets loose and expresses himself with pure energy. A very talented saxophonist and atypical of the standard GRP fare.
The only drawback I have with this release is that he hasn't a 'signature sound'. For example, Gato Barbeiri has the strained seemingly imploding reed sound. Stanley Turrentine has the solid, classy, elegant embouchure and bold timbre. Paul Desmond has the dry yet emotively sweet strain.
Nelson's sound is like Sanborn's (which isn't bad) however it isn't particularly unique. A favorite cut is "Grace." Listen to the peaks and valleys of the expelled force of air on this cut and the sublime beauty--it is aptly named. Nelson needs to release more albums as this. Another must have for your collection.
Review by Barbara A. Langan "Jersey Girl" (FLORENCE, NEW JERSEY) :: Amazon
I only recently "rediscovered" the CD, Destiny, much to my pleasure. It is simply a masterpiece. My favorite cut is "Sonora"(#9), a hauntingly beautiful, sensitive piece that tells a different story every time I hear it. There are also the more familiar tunes, such as the beautiful "Grace", and a terrific interpretation of the Burt Bacharach song, "A house is not a home". Simply put, this is a superb album and a great showcase of Nelson Rangell's enormous talents. He is truly a giant in the Smooth Jazz arena...and "DESTINY" shows just why!

In a class all by himself. His versatility and creativity make him the talented Sax player he is today. No traces of Sanborn, Elliot, Marienthal, or Koz.(with great respects to all) And absolutely blows Kenny G away. He has a fresh style all his own, and thats what makes him enjoyable to listen too...
Review by Daniel Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA USA) :: Amazon
In the world of smooth jazz, there is no shortage of saxophonists. When a musician with talent like Nelson Rangell comes along, you need to sit back and take a listen. Rangell really makes an alto sax sing on this release. Nowhere is this more evident than on the title track, "Turning Night Into Day." Nelson's coloration and sonic shading is especially enchanting on "Romantique."
From track to track, this artist truly shines as he paints a picture in music taking the listener along on a journey from night into day. On "All Hearts, One Heart" Rangell invokes an especially passionate mood. Another tune that's especially unique on this release is "The Journey;" it's here that Nelson shines on the piccolo readily creating an imaginary flight with the birds that sing in the morning. "La Repuesta (The Answer)" finishes this CD with a fanciful tune that has a latin flavor featuring Nelson on the flute.
The listener of this CD will easily appreciate the creativity embodied in each track and in the end, you can't help but long for more of Nelson Rangell.

...PICK UP THIS CD! One of the most popular jazz artists with a strong following on the concert circuit. If you haven't heard his music in person or on your stereo, pick this cd up and you'll do like all of Nelson's legion of fans...buy his entire collection of great music.
Review by Hiram Gomez Pardo (Valencia, Venezuela) :: Amazon
Conceived as one of the most prominent musicians of his generation, the vibrant sax of this gentleman is really terrific. His sound and wide dynamic range, amen of his brilliant performance as flute soloist, are firmly supported by a fine musical cast. Russ Freeman and Chuck Loeb are names that by themselves tells us something big is going on.
The selection begins with a moving theme "Turning night into day"; and the second theme is my favorite one "Time will tell" is a formidable song with Rangel exposing his abilities and gifts as musician. "Grace" is the following piece; of warm charm and radiant amusement, enjoyable lyricism and seductive brightness. "Joie de vivre" is one of the freshest compositions o this invaluable album, filled of invectiveness, breaths spring is commonly used as "curtain" in many TV programs. "Little dream girl" is a pleasant ballad. "map of the stars" is possibly the most imaginative composition of the CD. "Golden" is a jeweled song; full rounded of seductive persuasion and lavish tonal exuberance is certainly another of my supreme choices. "La respuesta" breaths that persuasive rhythm of Latin cadenzas. "One heart calling" is if I may, the autumnal song, filled of nostalgia and visible tenderness: Rangel makes sing the instrument at unthinkable levels. Sentiment and passion are blended magisterially tin order to give us one of his best selections of his lifetime. "All this time" is the most cheerful track of the album, without hesitation. And finally we have this sumptuous nocturnal piece "A house is not a home" with extraordinary rhythmic inflections and vibrant modulations that plainly will justify your inversion.
Review by Emmanuel Goldstein (Unity, Oregon) :: Amazon
I love listening to Nelson Rangell. I always have a few tracks from him on my play list. This was the first CD that I bought of his, and needless to say, I was very much impressed. When I listen to a musician, I don't care about her or his popularity, how "hip" it is to listen to him or her, or how many albums they've completed. All I care about is that the music sounds great, and Rangell certainly does. The man has a talent that is hard to replicate. He is a very gifted, and now I see why he has so many lifelong fans.

Review in JAZZIZ Magazine (2000) :: Amazon
"While this is somewhat of a broad record, everything is truly who I am," says Nelson Rangell of his newest CD, Always. "There's romance and there's play and reflections upon all the amazing and varied events and people in my life that have become a part of my character. A lot of what I play here has to do with my feelings and hopes for humanity." Along these lines, the smooth-jazz flutist and saxophonist apparently made a big connection with Dr. Seuss, as one track, "Oh, the Places You'll Go," borrows its title from one of the author's famous children's books.
Review by AJ Smith (Lathrup Village, MI USA) :: Amazon
I really love this cd. This cd gets played day and night, night and day at my home, in my car, at work. I have given many friends this cd as a gift. This cd is the best of all of his. Every cut is inspiring, superb, and just beautiful music. I have never found a artist that plays that well on every song, and continuously from cd to cd like Nelson. Nelson's music is the best smooth jazz music that I own in my collection. HIS MUSIC IS SOLID GOLD, PLATINUM and TITANIUM!!!
Review rtaction@gte.net (Missouri City, Tx) :: Amazon
I am a true Nelson Rangell fan from the heart. He plays technically and with precission. His sax play is very good and No he his not a David Sanborn sound a like as some critics would say. He has his own sound and style if you listen carefully. One thing I would like for him to do is to make a all FLUTE CD. This guys flute play is impecable. His trills and texture and tone are of the best quality I have ever heard from a jazz flutest besides Hubert Laws ("IN THE LAND OF PASSOIN" CD which I can't find anywhere). I would very much like for Nelson to do an ALL FLUTE CD someday. Once a gain Mr. Flute Himself just blows me away when every flute song that he plays.

As awesome as Far Away Day is, it is even more striking when you listen to other collections such as, "Destiny", and "Turning Night Into Day", as well as "Always."
Nelson Rangell is by far the greatest saxophone player no one has ever heard of. But every album just gets better and better. He has a range and a versatility that is unmatched. He playes alto, tenor and soprano saxophone in addition to the flute and blends them together seemlessly.
He changes tempo and inflection with ease, powering a song to conclusion one moment and lying quietly under the surface on the next. Anyone who has not experienced nelson Rangell is depriving themselves of a true pleasure.

One of the most popular, yet underexposed jazz saxophonist of the last decade, has hit his stride with this CD. This is vintage Nelson Rangell playing some wonderful new arrangements with people that he has worked with in the past.If you have never heard Nelson's scintillating music, this is a must cd for you!

Review by Johnny Loftus
Contemporary jazz saxophonist Nelson Rangell's 12th album, Look Again, finds the horn virtuoso concentrating on tenor, as opposed to the dominance of alto saxophone in his recent work. The album simmers with urban flavor and remains upbeat throughout. After the smooth lines and memorable chorus of the title track, Rangell employs his trademark double-tracked horn style on the funky "Dedication," which also features a Will Lee bassline hotter than a Las Vegas night. Soulful urban contemporary vocalist Will Downing contributes vocals to the romantic "Good Morning Love," while Rangell switches to alto sax for the contemplative down-tempo number "With All My Heart." The latter song also includes a tentative foray into Everything but the Girl-style electro-pop that, while not entirely successful, proves that Rangell is still willing to take chances in an often-maligned genre. Unfortunately, that bravery goes both ways. The ill-advised urban soul of "Whisper" attempts to marry Rangell's soprano noodling with Terry Black and Ben Macklin Jr.'s very Usher-like vocals. The song ends up sounding like the mismatched templates of two songs laid over one another. Fortunately, Look Again is filled with grooves galore, and is loaded with effusive, inventive solos from Rangell. There are still elements of David Sanborn in his sound, and when the beats waver, Look Again drifts into boring territory. But the album's urban textures at least muddy Rangell up enough so his material isn't completely drenched in smooth jazz lacquer.
Review by Daniel Rutkowski (Wernersville, PA USA) :: Aamazon
This release, long awaited by this reviewer, is a departure from Nelson Rangell's previous offerings. What would be most noticeable to those familiar with Rangell's earlier work is an emphasis on tenor sax as the lead voice, a decrease in alto sax and an absence of flute on this disc. The result is some of the most smoldering and soulful sax music ever recorded by Nelson. He really recorded something different on this album.
The tunes that appeal to me most on this CD are those produced by Chris Davis. These include Good Morning Love, Long Walk and Scenario. In fact, I found myself digging Scenario so much that it became my favorite song on this recording after only a few listenings; it reminded me of one of my all time favorite tunes, Rangell's "Grace" from the Destiny album.
This album has so much to offer because Nelson Rangell clearly plays for his audience. His genuine talent always shines through in his playing. Nelson's music is truly in a class with that vacation spot or fine restaurant no one else but you seems to know about, and the music, like that best-ever vacation experience or gourmet food, never disappoints. "With All My Heart"...I wish you all the best.

Nelson Rangell is the most under-rated saxophonist of our time. He deserves the highest of ratings! This album is evidence of what a superb and extremely gifted Nelson is. Yes, his saxophone and flute chops are out of this world, but, the quality and unique beauty behind each arrangement is what sets Nelson apart from the rest. Nelson has taken Christmas music to a whole new level. Nelson could have done an album like Kenny G did for Christmas, but Nelson set a new standard and brought the spirit of Christmas to my family. Thanks Nelson. This fulfilled my Christmas list...

This recording by alto/soprano saxophonist Nelson Rangell features his unique take on the great American standards. With bassist Jimmy Haslip and keyboardist Russell Ferrante of the Yellowjackets and other sideman, Rangell's tart and tight sax tones and pithy flute solos take straight-ahead jazz, Broadway tunes, folk ditties, and soul numbers, and translates them for smooth jazz radio. On "Introduction to America and..." the wordless vocal and the handclaps are reminiscent of Pat Metheny's "First Circle." Stevie Wonder's Latin-tinged number, "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," retains its Spanish Harlem swing, while Earth, Wind and Fire's "That the Way of the World," keeps its soulful message. Jazz pianist Hampton Hawes's "Sonora" may seem out of joint here, but Rangell's fans know it as the "Whistle Tune," because he whistled the melody when he played in a noisy club. Rangell has been compared to David Sanborn. This effort may change that.

I love this cd! I have all of Nels cds except the christmas cd. He keeps getting better and better! I've seen him several times whistle " Sonora" and it amazes me. I become transfixed! I love that song. It's one of my favorites and my new fave is " Don't you worry..." Any jazz fan of Nels has to add this one to their collection.

Review by Eugene Holley, Jr. :: Amazon
Unlike most jazz artists, saxophonist/flutist Nelson Rangell not only finds good songs from the '70s, but he also has the nerve to mix them with standards! His upgrade of the 1976 Crusaders gem "Free as the Wind," written by Joe Sample, pretty much sticks to the original harmonic and melodic script, as does his rendition of Earl Klugh's "Vonetta." But before you declare him a smooth jazz flunky, listen to his compelling retake of the Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," complete with the note-for-note reading of the "Famous Alto Break," that Charlie Parker immortalized in the '40s. Not an easy feat for anybody. Not be overshadowed by his robust alto, tenor, and alto lines, his fancy flute and piccolo lights up Stevie Wonder's ballad "Send One Your Love," emphasizing the often forgotten axiom that what a musician plays is just as important as how he plays.
Review by I. E. Mcfadden "Jazz Scholar" (Oakland, CA) :: Amazon
Nelson Rangell may have one of the hottest contemporary Jazz selections out with "Soul to Souls". Not since his "Always" has he been able to put together a package that flows so well from song to song. He begins this package with a rendition of the Crusaders' classic "Free As The Wind" which is done in good taste but is a softer sax than Wilton Felder's. That is followed by what may be the best cut, "City Lights", a soft midtempo number showcasing his range on the saxaphone. There are also some very nice ballds here with a rendition of Earl Klugh's "Vonetta", Stevie Wonder's "Send One Your Love" and the cut "When I Saw You". All are tunes done in Nelson-like fashion with wide ranges of the sax displayed here. His flute is also evident in several numbers here especially on "Send One Your Love". One impressive change on this package is the use of some background vocalists on several cuts that blend in well with the sax and flute. Overall, this is a well put together package that can capture any smooth jazz listener and keep their attention from one song to the next.

The New England Conservatory of Music
Он принимает участие в записи альбомов совместно с 'The Rippingtons', Chuck Loeb, Patti Austin, Tom Browne, и 'The GRP All-Star Big Band'.
