Good To Go-Go
This is the best of Spyro Gyra’s in years. After some average CD’s like Original Cinema, The Deep End & Wrapped in a Dream they came with this one. They couldn’t find a better tittle for this album because it’s really GOOD TO GO-GO. If you are a fan you will love this 1 but if you never heard them this is a good time to start doing it. Island time is the best track. ~ SA-CD.net review by Luis Sastre.
Trailblazers in the jazz fusion movement of the mid-1970s, Spyro Gyra continues to push the envelope with an edgy mix of melody, rhythm & song-writing that merges jazz with elements of R&B, funk, pop & more. The combo has crafted 4 brilliant records since joining the Heads Up roster in 2001 – the most recent being ‘Wrapped in a Dream’, a sleek & coolly textured set that garnered immediate critical praise following its release in early 2006. Their latest offering is just 1 more piece of evidence in support of an irrefutable truth: Spyro Gyra is the most original & most revered jazz fusion group in the world.

SA-CD.net reviews:
By Barb January 6, 2008:
This is my 5th Spyro Gyra SACD & again there’s high standard pop-jazz on 12 tracks, as on the other 4 discs before. Each of the discs itself has got good pop-jazz, but as a whole there’s too little alternation in the sound, so it gets a bit boring listening to Spyro Gyra. They should think about a small change of their sound, or else it may not be worth the price to buy another Spyro disc with the same music. They are trying some new instruments here, e.g. violin or steel pans giving somewhat a Caribbean touch on 1 or 2 tracks, but as a whole it is Spyro sound from the 1st note. Perfect, but very well known pop-jazz. I recommend this disc only to people who do not own lots of Spyro discs already.
The sound is very good, rich of colour, good soundstage & imaging, air for the instruments to breath, dynamic, brilliant.

I’ve been listening to SG since 1981 – had all their early years stuff on vinyl & have seen/heard them several times in concert. They’ve always been jaw-droppingly amazing live & most of their studio sessions in the last few years have failed to capture the magic that is Spyro Gyra. Not this CD. Cut 1 with Tom Schuman growling on the Rhodes & Julio cruising out on guitar is well-worth the price of admiission alone. No group, & I mean no group, has the raw talent & musicianship that these guys do. This CD allows them all to stretch out & develop their solos & boy does this CD groove. Run, don’t walk. . . . . Jay B & Co. have proven, once again, that they are the king of the contemporary jazz genre.

Agree that SG needs to change up the sound. How much perfection can we all stand?? Really, its a great group with near flawless production, but I’d like to hear them take some more chances next time. I like what they’ve done so far on this album with the congas etc, & I want more. As far as they go, this is a start for something new.
MWC says:
I would add that although the 2ch conversion shows a DR7 it still sounds great, with the compression making it punchy, if a tad loud.

Musicians:
Jay Beckenstein – Saxaphone
Tom Schuman – Keyboards
Julio Fernandez – Guitars
Scott Ambush – Bass
Bonny B – Drums, Percussion, Vocals
plus:
Andy Narell – steel pans,
Christian Howes – violin,
Marc Quinones – conga
