Ray Brown, Gene Harris & Jeff Hamiltion. That says MUST HAVE. This is very enjoyable to listen to. Best part is the cell phone ringing at the beginning of 1 of the songs…. errrrrr you really hear everything!! The Ray Brown Trio recorded this album live at The Loa in Santa Monica, CA, in July 1988. The club no longer exists, but at the time it was co-owned by Ray Brown. The Ray Brown Trio consisted of Brown’s colleagues Gene Harris, who plays a lot of piano that sounds rich, full-bodied, and not overly refined. The trio also features Jeff Hamilton, one of the stand-out drummers of the latter-day Woody Herman Herds. The CD version of this recording also features two bonus tracks, the distinctively arranged “It Don’t Mean A Thing…” and the old Nat King Cole favorite, “Mona Lisa.”
The incarnation of the Ray Brown Trio heard in this recording was 1 of the most exciting & swinging units that the bassist led during his Concord years. Each performance in this inspired live recording is a masterful display of striking dynamics, overt swing, & unrestrained blues.
