This is absolutely glorious. The remastering is stellar and the result is incredible. It sounds better than most things recorded today. The music is sublime as is the musicianship. Great all around recording and disc. I just wish it was longer…

In 1957, Miles Davis, high on the success of his recent collaborations with his old friend Gil Evans, persuaded Prestige Records to give Evans his own record date. Evans packed the resulting album with the brilliance that music insiders had recognized since his days as an arranger for Claude Thornhill in the 1940s and his work on Davis’ Birth of the Cool recordings. Writing for only 11 instruments, Evans used his wizardry with dynamics, motion and harmonic voicings to create orchestral effects suggesting a substantially larger orchestra. His settings stimulated his musicians to inspired improvisation. Among the soloists are trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, saxophonists Steve Lacy and Lee Konitz, and Evans himself, making his first recorded appearance as a pianist.

The original master tapes were deemed to be lost and suddenly right after sacd came out..lo and behold the tapes were discovered and this new sacd version was minted from those tapes. And the sound is totally awesome. A top notch sacd.
Those who are familiar with MIles Davis will also know Gil Evans. Davis is not here of course but some of his influence is. Evans brought together his own musicians and made the arrangements here. He is renown for the best arrangements and projects of the time period.The music is just awesome in every way with bold brass sections and a terrific ebb and flow to the tone of the songs.
The sound on this disc is terrific. At first it might sound a tad bright as some recordings of this period are. But that is just a first impression. Once the second track begins the listener can hear what all the fuss was about on this Evans album. Tons of air and bloom…fantastic horns that jump out at the listener…..huge sound stage and a wealth of tiny details that can easily be heard. A beautiful authentic analog feel and sound.
Fantastic sacd that has not been overshadowed by the technical advances of sacd.
Evans brilliant solo effort sounds amazing.
