Sunny (10:25)   Review by Scott Yanow Two of guitarist Pat Martino's finest recordings for the Muse label (Live! and Consciousness) are reissued in full on this double CD from 32 Jazz. Martino is heard in 1974 performing seven numbers (plus a new alternate take of "Along Came Betty") with electric pianist Eddie Green, bassist Tyrone Brown and drummer Sherman Ferguson. Martino brought in two originals and also performs John Coltrane's "Impressions," a lengthy exploration of Eric Kloss' "Consciousness," Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," and two versions of the Golson tune. The earlier set matches Martino with Brown, Ferguson and keyboardist Ron Thomas on three long selections: two originals and the pop song "Sunny." By the 1970s, Martino had his own fresh sound and an adventurous style that was quite distinctive.
