Ladino singer Odelia Dahan and the original jazz group the Yellow Submarine Ensemble had joined together in a new and unique project: imaginative jazz arrangements of traditional ladino songs.
The show and CD consist of eight compositions. They are best described as colorful jazz fantasies, which incorporate within themselves the simple and graceful ladino songs. The pieces derive their influence from a variety of musical roots: the ladino tradition from around the Mediterranean Sea, 20th century classical music such as Bartok and Stravinsky, Spanish and Latin music and of course, jazz.
As all the ensemble's previous work, the compositions' structures are more complex than the standard jazz tune. This rare musical treatment adds further layers of meaning, sometime even surreal, to the ancient Sephardic language.
Solika is a new project. It has been produced especially for the 2006 International Jazz Festival in Jerusalem and later released on this CD.
Odelia Dahan, incorporates in her voice rare qualities of clarity and warmth, with profound involvement in the Ladino culture. Odelia had absorbed the Ladino music and culture in her parents and grandparents' home in Jerusalem, her home town, and later added wide variety of formal studies: classical and jazz vocal training, BA in Spanish literature and Masters in musicology. Odelia also composes within the Ladino style, and the song Ojos llenos de amor is her own composition.
The Yellow Submarine Ensemble (YSE) was formed in 2000 in order to perform original music by Ittai Rosenbaum and Atcha Bar. The compositions, arrangements and improvisations are influenced from a wide variety of styles, but characterized by melodic and harmonic clarity.
The listener can identify the influence of musician such as Villa-Lobos, Bartok, Stravinsky, Alban Berg, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter and Carla Bley. These influences are meticulously interwoven into the bands' unique sound, whether dealing with jazz, or Khurdish music (a previous project) or Ladino music. YSE searches for authenticity of voice, rather than preservation.
The YSE had released one disc in 2001 and about to release the disc containing this project near the beginning of 2008. It had performed in several festivals in Israel, among them the Red Sea Jazz Festival, The Israel Festival and The International Jazz Festival in Jerusalem. YSE concerts were broadcasted on major Israeli TV and radio channels.
