Об исполнителе (группе)
Orchestre de Chambre Miniature - Volume 1 is the personal project of French violinist and composer Olivier Manchon, better known for his collaborations with indie acts My Brightest Diamond and Sufjan Stevens, and as co-leader of orchestral pop group Clare and the Reasons. With this mini chamber orchestra, Manchon showcases his skills as a gifted composer and arranger, creating a cinematic narrative of jazz and classical music performed on strings and woodwinds. The album also features John Ellis (Charlie Hunter, John Patitucci, Sting) on clarinet and saxophone and Gregoire Maret (Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller) on harmonica.

Об альбоме (сборнике)
"Orchestre de Chambre Miniature, Volume 1'' must be what Gunther Schuller had in mind 53 years ago when he coined the term "third stream,'' referring to a hybrid of classical and jazz...A gorgeous piece of work, full of lovely compositions, lush ensemble playing, and inspired improvisation. It's Ravel, cafe music, Philip Glass scores, and West Coast jazz in one. The way John Ellis wails through his bass clarinet over a repeated piano chord on "Just a Second'' breaks your heart, and the second half of "Thirds'' - built on a ridiculously simple two-chord arpeggio played by bass clarinet - is so beautiful you want to cry." -- The Boston Globe February 15, 2010
"Manchon's music feels like a kindred spirit to Esquivel's, with his mini-orchestra producing vignettes that evoke mystery, romance, fear, and whimsy." -- Blogcritics February 23, 2010
"Right from the first strains of "Breakfast Queen," the driving nature of Manchon's string arrangements is immediately audible. It is clear "Orchestre de Chambre Miniature" (OCM) will not be playing warmed-over covers of "Pachelbel's Canon...Enthusiastically recommended, OCM is a hip and urbane dialogue between jazz and classical that deserves attention from both camps" -- The Epoch Times February 15, 2010
"one of the most enjoyable crossover efforts I've enjoyed in some time now" -- Audiophile Audition
Fond of waltz tempos, Frenchman Olivier Manchon (also known for work with the pop group Clare & the Reasons) exploits the tried-and-true chamber string-ensemble format highlighted by his jazz violin to create a beautiful sound that brings the past into the present. These selections all have a similar pulse within different paces, emphasizing the pretty, romantic side of music while allowing for a bit of innovation and improvisation. Flowing, clean, and clear notions are undisturbed in a way that suggests nature is the key inspiration in making this lovely music. Busier than usual on "Breakfast Queen," the strings buzz around Manchon, and skitter during the flowing "Come Back." Then they turn mysterious on "Just a Second" and are solemn in slow death for "Feline Leukemia." A bass clarinet from John Ellis is introduced on the very slow "Thirds," but at the ensemble's most evocative, during "The Hanged Man," lines are drawn and blurred in a worried emotional state. They even re-create the sexy, late-night "Valse Triste" composed by Jean Sibelius. Alan Hampton helps on bass to add more jazz content, as does harmonica darling Gregoire Maret for "Memories." It is that feeling of wanting, needing, and not quite getting there that haunts the overtones and underlying thought process of Manchon's music, as if the classicism clashes with the abject desire to improvise more. No matter the concept, the music is fully realized, and can easily be appreciated. -- All Music Guide
