Review at All Music Guide (rovi) -------------------------------- Carla Bley - Go Together Artist Carla Bley Album Go Together Rating 4 Stars Release Date 1992 Recording Date 1992 Label ECM Type Instrumental Time 52:32 Genre * Jazz Style * Post-Bop Review by Scott Yanow After years spent emphasizing her compositions and bandleading abilities, in the late '80s, Carla Bley finally started featuring her own piano playing to a much greater degree. A melodic but explorative player, Bley (whose use of space sometimes recalls Thelonious Monk) interacts closely with the electric bass of Steve Swallow on this excellent duet session, performing six of her originals and two of Swallow's. Customer review at amazon.com ----------------------------- 5.0 out of 5 stars Dream-team Duo, with bonus mystery guitarist, April 8, 2003 By Chris Holmes "busker" (Corfu, Greece) This review is from: Go Together (Audio CD) Bley and Swallow can do no wrong - even if they *do* squander precious cover notes space on umpteen silly out-takes from the photo session. But the good news is that the dream team duo listed on the cover is actually a *trio*! An un-credited and singularly accomplished guitarist lifts this album into an even cooler gig. So who is he? Going by the solo on 'Masquerade in 3 Parts', I'd've said that old warhorse Jim Hall, but the acoustic work elsewhere bubbles with actual life and timbre that JH hasn't allowed into his fretboard meanderings for many a year. Any keen-eared aficionado care to put me out of my curiosity? ========================== 3. By paring them back to the simple piano-and-bass setting, these musical and personal soul mates infuse their performances with warmth and intimacy. ===================== 4. The Orlando Sentinel, 25 June, 1993 ----------------------------------- MUSIC - RECORDS June 25, 1993|By Parry Gettelman, Sentinel Popular Music Critic ***** Carla Bley/Steve Swallow, Go Together (Watt/ECM/PolyGram): Bacon and eggs, arms and legs, fish and chips, chains and whips - those are all represented in the pictorial press release for the second duet album from jazz pianist Carla Bley and bassist Steve Swallow, and, like Bley and Swallow, all those things Go Together. That might seem a bit whimsical, but after all, Swallow has anchored Bley's bands since 1978. Their musical rapport is astonishing, especially when presented in a duet setting. When Bley's attack is spiky and emphatic, as on the middle section of ''Sing Me Softly of the Blues,'' Swallow lends fluidity (sometimes it's hard to remember he's playing bass and not guitar). When her melodic lines are smooth and glowing, as on ''Mother of the Dead Man,'' he knows just where and how to accent their structure. Bley, meanwhile, plays off Swallow's bass lines as if they were horn charts, weaving through them, nestling into them, cutting across them or appropriating them and twisting them around. Ads by Google As on their first album alone together, Duets, they reinterpret several of their older compositions. ''Sing Me Softly of the Blues'' has a more pensive introduction. ''Fleur Carnivore,'' the title track from one of Bley's big-band albums, is more haunting here, but Bley and Swallow re-create the lushness of the original arrangement with the sensuousness of their playing. In Swallow's ''Peau Douce,'' originally recorded on Gary Burton's Times Square album, the sweet melody is tugged by exquisite rhythmic tensions - the song almost swings but not quite, almost breaks into a waltz but not quite. All of the songs work beautifully in these new arrangements, showing their essential sleekness and strength. Bley shows more of her Monkish, playful side in the new ''Doctor,'' with its slightly skewed rhythms and brief quote from ''Laura'' and even briefer is-it-or-isn't-it? allusion to Thelonious Monk's ''Epistrophy.'' The phrases of the melody seem to turn back on each other like Escher staircases that ascend and descend at the same time - or perhaps do neither. Swallow's ''Masquerade in 3 Parts'' is more straightforward but unusually relaxed and inventive, and the minor-key middle passage is exceptionally lovely. When only two musicians are involved, the balance between them must be perfect. And smooth or twisted, light or dark, Go Together has that delightful balance. ========================= WATT 24 Carla Bley / Steve Swallow Go Together ?1993 Recorded Summer 1992 at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, NY Engineer: Steve Swallow Produced by Carla Bley and Steve Swallow
