One of the latest albums to come out on the imprint is a collection of tunes by Washington DC-based organist Hilton Felton, all recorded in the early seventies. This compilation features five tracks taken from albums released on his own imprint ranging from smoking organ jazz to funky workouts and soulful grooves. The opening tune is Bee Bop Boogie, a classic slice of jazz-funk fusion, with the Latin-style drums and percussion leading the tune, and the sax, guitar and organ in perfect harmony on the main riff. A track that has popped up on one or two Japanese fun compilations in the past, this is an essential tune. Spreading Fever has a really laid back yet infectious groove that conjures up images of people gathering on a downtown street corner to shoot the breeze some time back in the early 70s. Organ jazz at its very finest. By contrast Dream Come True is a kind of trippy pop/soul number with harmonised vocals on the first half which is followed by a largely instrumental reprise. Then we move from trippy soul to psych funk with the awesome Your Analysis with its fuzzy psychedelic guitar over Felton's phenomenal organ playing. The final track on this collection is an instrumental version of Tell Her Love Has Felt The Need, made famous by Eddie Kendricks. Here the Hammond takes the main vocal line, with some fantastic flute work to accompany Felton. This Jazzman Records release serves as a good starting point for those coming to Felton's music for the first time, and is a timely release as some of his original full albums have been reissued in paper sleeve CD format in Japan. tokyojazznotes
