Listen to the polyrhythms, or just listen period. There are six tunes and six polyrhythmic themes. For example ( Samba de Rollins ) has a drum / tenor sax smoken' duet followed by an up tempo drum solo. The solo begins in 4/4 and as it developes the solo slips into half note triplets while the hi hat cymbal keeps the basic pulse going in 4/4. You can listen for these things happening throughout the cd or just listen, the cd stands on it's own. track #1: " Doin Time in 4+6 " Features 6 over 4 ( quarter note triplets ) or 1&1/2 to 1. the drums are in both times at the same time throughout. track #2: " Five for Barbara" Listen for this 5/4 composition go into 4/4 as the drums then go into 5 over the 4/4 track #3: " The Modulator" Metric modulations: Listen for three tempo 's going up and then three tempos modulating back down. ( George Duke on the acustic piano is happening ) track #4: " Seventy Fourth Ave." The band is in 7 the bass is in 4.( at the same time ) track #5: " Samba de Rollin's " ( Don Menza just of the Buddy Rich) band at his best and it is also his composition.
