Brubeck sounds typically creative yet often wistful on the seven standards, four originals, and a "Tribute to Stephen Foster." This is a fine addition to Brubeck's extensive yet consistently satisfying discography. ~ Scott YanowRecorded at Carriage House Studio, Stamford, Connecticut, Power Station, New York, New York and live at Performing Arts Center, State University at Purchase, New York in 1994. Mataconis (Bristow, Virginia) It took about 40 years for Dave Brubeck to get around to releasing a new solo recording. After listening to this, the first questions that come to mind are; what took so long ? and, what have we missed out on ?This is a simply spectacular peformance that showcases Brubeck's talent in all its aspects. In addition to the classic Brubeck style that many fans are familiar with, you'll also see glimpses of the other influences on this style including a clear and unmistakable allusion to his training classical music sprinkled throughout the recording. At the same time, however, Brubeck clearly shows that he is, at heart, a jazz musician and the improvisational variations on "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime ?" are, in my opinion, among the finest examples of solo piano jazz on record.Another essential Brubeck recording, and another classic from a man who's produced many.---5.0 out of 5 stars - Very very nice, September 7, 2003 By: "garfieldguy" (Matthews, NC United States) This, which was Dave's first solo recording in 40 years, is an excellent album. A nice range of tunes played by a brilliant (and under-rated) pianist. As good as it is, the subsequent "One Alone" is even better. Buy both now! :-D---5.0 out of 5 stars - great cd, August 30, 2009 By: T. Jeffers (dallas, TX USA) I have always loved this cd. I bought one for my sister who listened to it on a car trip. We never tired of it.
