Родился 24 марта 1963 года (в один день с другим трубачом – Дэйвом Дугласом) в г. Хейзен (Huizen). В его семье музыкантов не было. К музыке его приобщил отец друга – флейтист. В девять лет увлекся тромбоном и трубой и, в итоге, стал играть на трубе. Ещё учась в музыкальной школе, выступал солистом вместе с биг-бэндом. В 19 лет переезжает в Роттердам, где начинает учиться в консерватории. Со второго курса выбирает джазовое направление. С 1988 года продолжает обучение в Нью-Йорке. Первый альбом “No Realistics” выпускает в 1991 году. С тех пор становится лауреатом многочисленных премий: Dutch Edison Award, Elly Ameling Prize of the City of Rotterdam, the Boy Edgar Award, Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Gouden Notenkracker.
