Guitarist Albert Dadon lives in Australia where he also directs the Melbourne Jazz Festival, but he was born in Morocco and grew up in Israel and France so the eclecticism in his electric fusion jazz is built in as are the world music influences.
The band, called the Freeworld Jazz Project, is suitably international with a Cuban bassist and Venezuelan drummer in addition to crucial player and composer Phil Turcio, from Australia. It recorded this album in Brooklyn, New York.
Albare’s music sometimes reflects that of Pat Metheny, and like Metheny he also sometimes plays a synth guitar. Generally there is attention to the quiet groove and lyrical, melodic improvisations. In addition to the original tunes there is also a stylish interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s Overjoyed.
