A shrewd composer, whether writing for big band or small ensemble, here Bates uses the "London Sinfonietta" strings orchestra, as well as the "Human Chain" septet and the "Apollo Saxophone Quartet." Bates discloses that the premise for this recording emanates from the "BBC World Service" news channel. In effect, the artist listens to this news service while writing music. And with this outing, Bates ventures into a "third stream" framework, featuring bustling symphonic arrangements, supplanted by a generic vibe that might be considered standard fare for typical news broadcasts. However, Bates and his musical associates expound upon these sort of movements that hearken notions of a busy world at work. To that end, the musicians meld modern jazz riffs with the orchestra's melodramatically inclined passages. There's an abundance of peaks, valleys and sublime moments here, but an unending sense of movement permeates much of the proceedings. No doubt, Bates conveys a mood-evoking climate. As he abides by a multilateral mindset, consisting of reflective opuses and subtle deconstructions of various motifs. Not to mention the musicians cunning contrapuntal maneuvers! Chalk it all up to more good news from an artist, whose recorded output has subsided a bit since the advent of the new millennium. ~ Glenn Astarita, RoviThis is a really wonderful collection of diverse Bates' works, performed by a variety of ensembles including Bates' Human Chain, The Apollo Saxophone Quartet, London Sinfonietta, and the Smith Quartet. "Three English Scenes", "Pond Life", and "Travel Cartoons for the Blind" are certainly highlights, the latter being my personal favorite, painting a dramatic set of mental images that live up to their name. "Candles Still Flicker In Romania's Dark" and "Horses In Rain" also deserve special mention. "Candles" is a quiet, contemplative piece (originally written for Bill Bruford's Earthworks, of which Bates was a member) featuring a tear-rendering performance by Bates on E flat horn. "Horses" features a similarly emotive vocal performance by Norwegan Sidsel Endresen. ~ flip phillips, AmazonHuman Chain is Django Bates' quartet. The current line up features Iain Ballamy on saxophones, Michael Mondesir on electric bass and Martin France on drums with Django on keyboards and tenor horn. This band has evolved over the years from the first enigmatic episode which was a duo of Django and drummer Steve Argüelles. Since then Human Chain toured in South America, including dates in Chile, Colombia and Argentina in 1991; and in 1992 played at a number of festivals in Europe including the Belfast International Festival, the Delta International Jazz Festival in the Hague in Holland and the Outside In International Contemporary Music Festival in Crawley. In 1993 Django Bates was commissioned by the Bath International Festival to write a new piece of work for the band and concert pianist Joanna MacGregor and toured extensively in the UK as well as receiving rave reviews for their performances in Canada and Europe. Human Chain have recorded two albums, Human Chain and Cashin' In, and a number of tracks on the albums - summer fruits (and unrest) and winter truce (and homes ablaze) - are by Human Chain.
