In the early 1940s I started Jazz at the Philharmonic, not only as a concert presentation, but also with a concomitant series of albums which were recorded at the concerts. By the end of the 1940s, Jazz at the Philharmonic was the biggest factor in jazz in terms of concert performance: in fact, it was the only permanent touring concert presentation that travelled throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan on extended tours. It was, in short, the progenitor of all jazz concerts and jazz festivals that abound in the world today.
Traditionally, Jazz at the Philharmonic used to open in New York City by doing an 8 P.M. concert at Carnegie Hall and, immediately following that, a midnight concert across the river in Newark. (Later, when we became more successful we did two concerts the same evening in New York). That was our usual Saturday night opening of the tour, and it took place before the best audience in the most important city in America for jazz. But, after a few years, I thought it a good idea to open (as plays did) out of town, and for us the closest and most logical city for that kind of an opening was Hartford, Conn, in that we could drive from New York, do the gig, and return the same evening.
This album is from a concert taped in 1953 at Hartford's Bushnell Memorial Auditorium, and it was one of the best groups of great musicians of all the tours. Following the Jazz at t he Philharmonic format the concert began with a jam session. After that the Oscar Peterson Quartet did its own set, and, reverting to being the rhythm section, backed Lester Young in his set. Incidentally, Pres was on that night and played with the same attack and authority as he did in the days when he was part of Count Basie's band.
The album consists entirely of unreleased material and I suggest that it is one of the most exciting musical experiences in the entire Jazz at the Philharmonic series.
