Об альбоме (сборнике)
This is the right way for a label to record an anthology of tracks featuring its artists. First, eleven outstanding groups are featured. Second, the anthology includes pieces never before released on CD, rather than selections from previously issued CDs. The exquisite production and extensive liner notes with full discographical information and bonus bibliography make this a "must-buy" for lovers of adventurous jazz. Among the artists represented are trumpeter Dave Douglas, pianist Paul Plimley, clarinetist François Houle, tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, guitarist Ben Monder, and alto saxophonist Briggan Krauss. With a lineup of that caliber, it is no wonder Songlines has emerged as one of the world's up-and-coming small jazz labels. Kudos to producer Tony Rief for fulfilling an ambitious vision. ~ steve loewy, allmusic.com
Musical connections and overlapping personnel create a textural mosaic of the label and its approach to sound... Reif's choices reveal a pronounced awareness of the many stylistic currents - structured improvisation, punkish slash and burn, European atonal and folk, Stockhausian sculptural - that inform the new jazz. ~ josef murphy, 5/4 magazine.
Those of you familiar with Songlines know that liner notes are the exception rather than the rule, because generally the musicians want their music to speak for itself - and if it doesn't, what good is one more authority, even the artist himself, telling you why it should? Better leave that to the critics to sort out. But, in this case, I can't resist the opportunity to comment on the music we've included here from my own perspective as curator - which among other things is what someone who starts a small label pretty quickly becomes. You love music, and you have an idea of the kind of music you want to put out if the label has a concept (implicitly at least, Songlines does). You go looking for music, and music comes to you as the label becomes better known. But what decides it is some very personal thrill, something special that gets to you - perhaps immediately or perhaps in degrees, becaus you're often apprehending it through the imperfection of concert tapes or hastily recorde demos, not to mention your own preconceptions. There's no shortage of good music around, but when you're going to spend the energy required to help shape a project, get it out there, and convincingly promote it, you'd better like it a whole lot. If you really can't resist doing a record, you know there'll be other people out there who'll treasure it too. (You're also taking a calculated risk that ther are enough of them to keep the financial ball rolling, and that you can find them.) So, here are some of the things i find notable about these musicians and the pieces we've jointly chosen for this first compilation. I hope that as you listen to the CD you'll make some interesting discoveries too. What runs through these tunes and connects them is one working definition of the Songlines concept. Not that it's fixed or limited, of course, to this selection or to these artists. It started as a metaphor, the songline, and has taken shape in ways I couldn't have exactly predicted four years ago. But that metaphor remains some kind of touchstone, so I'd better take a stab at explaining it. (I'm indebted to Bruce Chatwin, whose personal narrative about and reflections on this time in the outback, The Songlines, shaped my understanding.) "Songline" is the Euopeans' term for an Australian artform, a song cycle about the Dreamtime. Each song is perfomed at the place where the events it recounts (creation myths, stories about the exploits of the totemic ancestor gods, the first people) happened - a rock, a pool, locations in the territory of a clan that have special meaning. Songlines are the panths traced between these landscape features. And they connect inner and outer worlds, the past and present with the timeless (music can do that). I had my own songlines, I was sure6 they were those of a jazz lover who had been lifted up by the power of spontaneous creation, and they were those of a musical traveller who had delved into various traditions and finally was learning to play Javanese gamelan, that "moonlight on flowing water". Songlines the label necessarily would be noticing connections between different forms and cultures, looking for music that was new and in the moment but honoured deep roots. All the music here is released on CD for the first time and its provenance is mixed. There are alternate takes from studio sessions and from a couple of live dates. There's a tune that we couldn't program on an enhanced CD for reasons of space. There are two instanced of a Songlines artist perfoming in other contexts, and there are pieces by artists who don't have CDs on Songlines but i hope will. So it's not a sampler, and it is intended to be listened to from beginning to end, telling its own story but also referring back to the body of music from which it comes, helping perhaps to throw some light on the processes of creation in the '90s. ~ tony reif, january 1996, songlines
