Barabas Lorinc Eklektric was founded in Budapest in November, 2005 - at the right place in the right time. The head of the band, trumpeter Lorinc Barabas has demonstrated his talent in several bands and styles (Irie Maffia, soulwhat, The Uptown Felaz), not just in Hungary, but also around Europe and further away. With enough experience behind him, he decided to go his own way, accompanied by excellent musicians. Their newly formed band literally blasting into Budapest club life bodes well, exceptional interest and appreciation characterize their concerts...taste it...
Named after trumpet player front man Lorinc Barabas, this eclectic urban dance music band was formed in 2006 in Budapest. By his early twenties Lorinc was equally at home in classic jazz as he was in underground dance circles (playing live with local DJs); he was equally excited by the freedom of improvisation and the adrenaline fuelled energy of dance music. When forming his own band he recruited from the ranks of his jazz faculty classmates (Julianna Fabian – vocals, Javor Delov – drums, Istvan Bata – bass guitar, Matyas Premecz – keyboard) and also from Budapest's vibrant underground; Sena Dagadu (DJ Vadim, Irie-ites, Refactory, Irie Maffia) - vocals, Dr. Dermot (Irie Maffia) - trombone & scratch, MC Kermon - rap.
Ladal, the band’s 2007 debut album, was conceived in the name of diversity. Jazz as well as almany sub-genres of modern, urban music (reggae, hip hop, drum and bass, electronica, lounge and breaks) were represented, each as a light spice to the instantly recognisable, unified sound of the band. The Hungarian media soon took notice and backed by enthusiastic reviews the freshly launched Hungarian MTV and the culturally formative mr2 Radio both picked up the single „Famous". Ladal was also shortlisted for the Jazz Album of the Year prize at the Fonogram Awards, the most prestigious music award ceremony in Hungary.
It's a dilemma for all musicians: in which direction do you continue after the first album, especially one that was so lauded by both critics and audiences? Eklektric - like the creative troubadours they are - chose a more difficult path. Their 2009 album, Trick, is dominated by vocals. Recorded with two new members (Dr.Dermot and Sena have been replaced by DJ QC Scratch Master and Kasai, a Dominican singer coming from a funk-reggae background) the second album is more streamlined and faster. It contains just as many great songs destined to be hits as its predecessor did.
The band has already toured London, Paris and Vienna. Lorinc Barabas has shared the band have played London, Paris and Vienna and Lorinc Barabas has also shared the stage with the likes of Nicola Conte, Parov Stelar, Scrimshire and Bonobo. At home, they have organised parties together with Eric Truffaz and Parov Stelar. The band has opened concerts for Morcheeba, Basement Jaxx, Maceo Parker and DJ Krush. They have played at all the leading Hungarian festivals (Sziget, VOLT, Balaton Sound) and popular music events. They also regularly fill the best Budapest live music venues (A38, Godor).
