Аннотация к изданию (english)¡Baila!.is a global Latin party featuring salsa, cumbia, and meringue mixed with contemporary dance beats and rhythms. The party starts in the streets of Havana before hitting the road. Raul Paz kicks it off with "Mua Mua Mua," seamlessly blending the deep grooves of his native Cuba with the contemporary stylings he’s picked up since relocating to France. Back in Cuba NG La Banda offer "La Cachimba" their mission statement announcing the virtues of a new musical style that’s sure to make you dance. Next the party travels to Colombia, where the collective known as La-33 is revitalizing salsa by reconnecting it to the genre’s golden era of the 1960s and 70s. Not to be outdone, however, New York delivers a rhythm-driven one-two punch with The Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Yerba Buena contributing the best of the old school and the new. On the West Coast, Argentinean ex-pats Los Pinguos and Congo native Ricardo Lemvo integrate various Latin elements that keep the party people on their feet. The next stop on the party express is Belgium, where Gabriel Rios landed after leaving his native Puerto. Experimenting with a variety of influences while maintaining his deep Latin roots has made this unique musician an unlikely pop star in his adopted home. Next we travel to Stockholm, Sweden, where the high-powered ensemble Calle Real is bringing a thaw to their native city. The Africando All Stars and Brooklyn Funk Essentials round out this collection, proving once and for all that the party is right here.

Аннотация к изданию (english)While the irresistible sounds of Afro-Latin music have long been a highlight of Putumayo collections, ¡Salsa! focuses on the upbeat, danceable style that has become a worldwide phenomenon. Featured prominently on television’s popular dance contest shows, tens of thousands of dance schools have incorporated salsa classes, thousands of nightclubs now offer salsa nights and scores of international salsa congresses and cruises draw in hundreds of thousands of salsa dancers. As a result, salsa has truly become mainstream.“Salsa” is Spanish for “sauce” and, when used in a culinary setting, refers to something spicy that adds an extra kick to a dish. By the 1960s, the word “salsa” had become an umbrella phrase for a variety of Latin, primarily Afro-Cuban, music styles. ¡Salsa! features blazing tracks from Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and New York City, where the modern salsa movement took off in the 1960s and 70s. Salsa has since become the musical heartbeat of much of the Latin world and its reach has spread across the globe. The CD features Puerto Rican legends of New York’s pioneering salsa scene such as piano virtuoso Eddie Palmieri and singer Cheo Feliciano (guesting with legendary Cuban ensemble Orquesta Aragon). Other mainstays of New York’s Latin music scene are Cuban artists Chico Alvarez and Puerto Rican/New York ensemble Son Boricua.Poncho Sanchez, a Los Angeles-based Latin jazz star, blends Cuban son with the American jazz and rhythm and blues he also grew up with. ¡Salsa! also features Ricardo Lemvo, a Los Angeles-based Congolese musician whose appealing blend of African soukouss and salsa has graced several Putumayo collections over the years. Another rising Latin musician featured on this collection is Cuban-American Jose Conde. For nearly 40 years, the popular Colombian group Fruko y Sus Tesos has retained a firm foothold in the upper echelons of the international salsa scene. Grupo Galé is another Colombian group known for their catchy, danceable songs.Putumayo has traveled the Latin world seeking some of the best tracks by many of the legends and rising stars of salsa. With the release of ¡Salsa! the Putumayo slogan “Guaranteed to Make You Feel Good” has never been more accurate!

Аннотация к изданию (english)Every so often, an album comes along that reminds us why we are so moved by song: the melody, the rhythm, and the message. Putumayo has presented a variety of world music CDs, but African music has been the consistent heart and soul of its offerings. Putumayo World Music is pleased to present Acoustic Africa, a captivating collection showcasing some of Africa’s greatest singer-songwriters in beautifully stripped down displays of acoustic mastery. These artists are helping to spearhead an acoustic revolution in stark contrast to the studio-based, synthesized dance music that became the standard for African pop-stars of the 1980’s and 90’s. On Acoustic Africa, you’ll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Putumayo World Music brings the romance and charm of Paris and the French countryside with the release of Acoustic France. This collection features contemporary chanson and acoustic pop by established stars and up-and-coming artists from today’s thriving French music scene. Inspired by the classic styles of an earlier generation, young artists are borrowing from old-school lyric-driven composition, folk and Gypsy jazz to create an appealing modern sound. The music captures the ambiance of strolling along the Seine or sipping wine in a Parisian cafe on a beautiful summer day.Featured artists include Thomas Dutronc, the son of popular French singer Francoise Hardy and film star/singer Jacques Dutronc, whose sound was influenced by legendary Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Sandrine Kiberlain, who released her critically acclaimed French debut album in 2005, first gained prominence as an award-winning actress in her native France. Carla Bruni, who recently made headlines for marrying French President Nicolas Sarkozy, started her career as a supermodel and actress but her musical talent has garnered her world-wide fame.Several other exciting artists featured on Acoustic France have spent at least part of their lives outside of France and these influences radiate throughout the collection. Constance Amiot was raised by French parents in West Africa and the Washington DC area before settling in France a few years ago. French in spirit, if not in direct origin, Pascal Lejeune, from New Brunswick, Canada, exhibits a gift for wordplay and creating melodies that sound like they’ve always existed and that have earned him comparisons to French legend Georges Brassens. Rupa & the April Fishes is a San Francisco-based group whose album eXtraOrdinary rendition was released in spring 2008 by Cumbancha, an artist label affiliated with Putumayo World Music. Lead singer and songwriter Rupa spent many of her formative years in southern France, where her mother still resides.Included in the liner notes is a signature recipe from 3 star Michelin French chef Michel Troisgros of La Maison Troisgros. Sifflets De Sole A La Banane Et Citron Vert (Banana and Lime Sole) is well-paired with the flavorful melodies served on this collection.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Croatian salsa, Cuban ska, and Oregonian mambo!?!? These are three of the unlikely gems listeners will find on Afro-Latin Party. What started out as an effort to provide the perfect soundtrack to a Latin dance party became a tribute to the global appreciation and realization of the musical ricochet between Cuba and Africa.Central to the Afro-Latin phenomenon is Africando, who provide three songs on Afro-Latin Party, each with a different African lead singer. In the 1960s and 1970s, the biggest names in African music—including such heavyweights as Youssou N’Dour and Salif Keita—were performing Latin music, thanks to vinyl that came over from abroad. Cultural exchange between Cuba and the socialist governments in Mali and other parts of West Africa was a regular phenomenon. Performers like the Fania All Stars and Celia Cruz toured Africa and became musical icons. In 1992, legendary Africando founders Ibrahim Sylla and Boncana Maïga traveled to New York to record with top local salsa musicians, many who were taken by surprise by these Africans performing their phonetically learned Spanish lyrics. Interestingly, many of the band members on the three Africando tracks here, also play on other tracks on Afro-Latin Party.“I once asked [Putumayo founder] Dan Storper, ‘If you could sign any band in the world ever, who would you sign?’” says album producer and VP of A&R Jacob Edgar. “He said Bob Marley and thought for a moment, and then said Africando.” The band, which uses a revolving roster of African singers, “takes these two separate worlds, and adds something to the style, in the way they sing and the way they arrange, that is so magical. It is almost better than the sum of these two powerful musical elements,” adds Edgar. It is not surprising to find Nuyorican José Mangual Jr. on the collection. His song, “Ritmo con Aché” celebrates the African roots in Latino culture, referring to the West African Yoruba word, aché—a divine life force from the santería religion, which blends West African spirituality and Catholicism. In 1968, Mangual joined forces with Willie Colón and Hector Lavoe to record some of the most influential salsa albums of all time. Nor is it a shock to hear Chico Álvarez on the set. He’s probably best known for his highly respected New World Gallery program on WBAI radio in New York. Here he sings “Cógele el Gusto,” a song made popular by Celia Cruz in the early 1960s. It was also one of the earliest tracks to use the word salsa to describe Afro-Cuban dance music. This track was first released in 1981 on SAR, the same label that has put out much Afro-Latin music.Things get interesting when Ska Cubano’s “Babalu”—another tribute to santería—rings through the sound system. Ska Cubano exists as if Cuba never closed its doors to the rest of the Caribbean in 1959. Before that, styles like Trinidadian calypso maintained great popularity in Cuba. With old school Cuban players and a young, stylish ska singer from South London, this band is sure to make waves as Americans hear more from them in the future.Cubismo—whose presence on this album confirms the global reach of Afro-Latin music—is not only Croatia’s best salsa band, they pride themselves on being able to compete with the hottest groups out of New York or Havana. Jacob Edgar came across the band in his pre-producer days as a music journalist, when he wrote them up for world music mag The Beat, a review that Cubismo later quoted in their own liner notes.Portland, Oregon’s Pepe and the Bottle Blondes—who are led by a former singer from Pink Martini—deck themselves out with an updated 1950s kitsch mambo delivery. “Cuéntame Que Te Pasó” is a taste from their self-released debut album Latenight Betty. Also from the west coast is Congo-born Ricardo Lemvo, who is equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo. The CD is rounded out with a salsified Martinique classic, first recorded by Rasta banjo player Kali, but performed here by Martinique-born, Paris-based zouk-super-producer Ronald Rubinel.Even with all the geographic and era crisscrossing on the album, at its core Afro-Latin Party is still a dance record beckoning party-goers to traverse the planet while they navigate the dance-floor.

Аннотация к изданию (english)A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations. --Derek Rath

Аннотация к изданию (english)With American Blues, Putumayo continues its successful series of blues and blues- influenced albums that began in 1999 with Mali to Memphis: An African-American Odyssey. American Blues is a collection of some of our favorite blues tracks by legends and rising stars that are helping to keep the blues alive and thriving. The artists on this compilation have remained true to the roots of the blues, be those the acoustic guitar sounds of the Mississippi Delta, the urban electric drive of Chicago, or the swamp boogie of Louisiana. While they may have developed their own unique voices and approaches, they have made it their mission to respect the fundamental sound, structure and soul of the blues.

Аннотация к изданию (english)The landscape of American music is as vast and varied as the geography of the country itself. At its root are a range of diverse cultural influences that have combined to form what is now called Americana music. Sometimes called “alternative country,” it’s a genre whose parameters are broad enough to include bluegrass, folk and traditional country with occasional elements of blues, jazz and others thrown in. In the 1990s, Americana made a home for itself on the airwaves, bridging the gap between Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) and mainstream country radio and allowing audiences to explore a sound stripped of the slick production that usually dominates the industry.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Brasiliero, a wonderfully diverse introduction to Brazilian music, is a sophisticated blend of folk-pop and cool jazz, as embraced by artists both well and little known, in the most popular styles: samba, bossa nova, and MBP (musica popular Brasileiro). As with Cuban music, the greatest influence on Brazilian music came from African slaves who were imported to farm sugar, tobacco, and cotton plantations. With that influence comes a complex rhythmic structure and a prevailing sense of melancholy. Bearing this out, "Daca de Solidao" ("Dance of Solitude") is deliciously thick as performed by the dusky-voiced Beth Carvalho. Chico Cesar's "Mama Africa" is a perfect sociopolitical pop hit, blending hard-hitting lyrics with bouncy percussion and Jamaican reggae. Other standouts include Jorge Ben's wiggly feel-good romp "O Namorado da Viuva" ("The Widow's Boyfriend") and Joao Bosco's dancing guitar on "Vatapa," which pays homage to the traditional dish of the same name. --Paige La Grone

Аннотация к изданию (english)Forming a trilogy of sound with 1999's Putumayo releases Louisiana Gumbo and Zydeco (one of the label's biggest sellers of all time), Putumayo Presents Cajun may prove redundant for serious enthusiasts of the genre yet is an excellent starting point for newer listeners. Southwestern Louisiana Cajun culture, born of the French Acadians displaced when their homeland was taken over by the British in the mid-1700s, is celebrated for both its food and its music. The tunes are often folk ballads, lullabies, and dance music like waltzes or two-steps. Cajun music is related to but distinct from zydeco; both feature the accordion as lead instrument, but the latter incorporates electric guitar and pays a greater debt to rhythm & blues than does the older-fashioned acoustic stylings of the former. To that end, there is still a great deal of room for an influx of influences in Cajun music, such as the country flavor of the Jambalaya Cajun Band's version of the popular "Les Flammes d'en Fer" as it appears on this collection. David Doucet, of Beausoleil, one of the genre's better-known groups, contributes a bluegrassy version of "Balfa Waltz," one of several of the compilation's references to Cajun music great Dewey Balfa and his family of players. Doucet's turn here features guitar in the lead and the appearance of Josh Graves on Dobro. Elsewhere there is a great deal of fiddle-accordion pairings in the traditional manner of the style, with bits of Texas swing, Creole, and zydeco to spice it all up quite handsomely. --Paige La Grone

Аннотация к изданию (english)Many of us first heard about Cape Verde through the exquisite voice of Cesaria Evora. Over the past few years, some of the favorite songs on our collections have come from talented Cape Verdean artists. Not only are they starkly beautiful islands, but they are home to one of the world's greatest musical treasure troves.Brazilian and Cape Verdean music share a common Portuguese heritage. And since these rocky isolated islands are located 300 miles off the coast of Senegal in West Africa, the African influence is also very strong. Cape Verde offers a musical bounty similar in feel to the Brasileiro collection, but with something mysterious and evocative that can only be traced to the romance of these remote and exotic islands.

Аннотация к изданию (english)A musical reunion between the irresistible swing of Cuban son and the soul of West African salsa, Putumayo's Congo to Cuba is a memorable collection of Afro-Latin grooves. Inspired by the critical and commercial success of the Putumayo compilations Afro-Latino and
Mali to Memphis, we've gone back to the archives to uncover some classic and contemporary gems of Cuban music and Cuban-influenced African music. Congo to Cuba reveals the deep cultural connections between these two distant worlds.Congo to Cuba is a celebration of the ways in which music has helped keep the African-Cuban connection vibrant over the years. It features a number of the classic Latin recordings that were popular in Africa, as well as work by African artists who pay tribute to the Afro-Cuban sound. While time and distance may keep them apart, common heritage and family ties between West Africa and Cuba have provided a bond that can never be broken. The music on Congo to Cuba is a powerful and thoroughly enjoyable testament to the unifying nature of music.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Wander through the exhilarating world of Gypsy music with Gypsy Caravan, a selection of songs from a culture where music is an essential part of daily life. Gypsies have long been known as gifted musicians and their music has enlivened weddings, dances and other celebrations for centuries. Gypsy Caravan includes gorgeous songs that will astonish the listener with their emotional depth, entrancing rhythms and alluring melodies.Over the years, Gypsies have been simultaneously scorned and glorified, rejected and romanticized. They are almost mythical and magical beings, representing people outside the confines and mundane realities of the everyday world. Gypsy music is exotic, mysterious and accessible and will appeal to a broad range of people who are interested in world and folk music. The success of films and soundtracks on Gypsy music such as Latcho Drom reveals that there is broad interest in Gypsy music and culture. Gypsy Caravan also features detailed liner notes by noted music critic and Gypsy music specialist Michal Shapiro.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Though often misrepresented and romanticized, Gypsies, or the Roma, as they prefer to be called, have had a fascinating history. Leaving the Indus Valley more than 1,000 years ago, they migrated first to the Middle East and Eastern Europe and then to the rest of the world, making an impact on the cultures with which they came into contact. They earned reputations as master musicians and entertainers whose influences can be heard in a variety of genres, including flamenco, Jewish klezmer and the works of Dvorak, Rachmaninov and other classical composers. Now, modern day music makers from a variety of backgrounds are mining this rich legacy to create a movement that’s gained dance floor disciples around the world. Putumayo World Music presents Gypsy Groove, a collection of Balkan beats, gypsy jams and other treats from the leaders of this vibrant music scene.

Аннотация к изданию (english)After the chaos and destruction of World War II and the conservative musical environment Italian leaders promoted, the Italian public was ready for a more relaxed sound. Jazz, swing and boogie-woogie were achieving worldwide popularity and, in Italy, merged with the Italian crooner tradition. The musical rebirth of the 1950s and ’60s was like a second liberation. What’s old is new and Putumayo’s June 21, 2005 release Italian Cafe captures the music and attitude from that era and from current singers whose musical DNA follows that lineage. The CD follows Putumayo’s successful French Cafe collection. Many of the artists on Italian Cafe packed the nightclubs of the era and gained popularity through Italy’s newly inaugurated TV channels and burgeoning film industry. The image of the lovable hoodlum came to life in Fred Buscaglione. While most foreign music was banned under the Italian fascist regime, Buscaglione wound up in a U.S. internment camp, where he was able to get a jumpstart in trying out the styles emerging from America. True to his fast-living ways, he died at 40, crashing his pink Thunderbird into an oncoming truck early one morning in 1960.Quartetto Cetra emerged in the late ’40s, when they provided the overdubs for the Italian versions of the movies "Dumbo" and "Wizard of Oz." The following decade found Renato Carosone blending Neapolitan folk music with American jazz and boogie-woogie to create a signature style that made him a household name in Italy and a chart-topping crooner in the U.S.Nicola Arigliano, now in his 80s, is the only 1950s-era artist on Italian Cafe performing to this day. Born in 1923 in a small village in southern Italy, Arigliano ran away from home when he was just 11 years old to play music in the nightclubs of Milan. After experiencing great commercial success, Arigliano disappeared from the concert stage for 30 years. In the past decade, he has re-emerged with four new albums and a critic’s award at the glitzy San Remo Festival. Two songs on the CD come from Giorgio Conte, who is not as well known as his brother, Paolo. As both songs demonstrate, however, the older brother has a jovial spirit that shines through in his lyrics. “Gne Gne” pokes fun at a very famous movie star lover of his who never says anything of meaning, only petty gossip and “gne gne.” “Cannelloni” teases another lover who is always on a diet and never can enjoy the pleasures of pasta.Gianmaria Testa is more famous abroad than he is at home in Italy, where he works as a tran station manager. Testa performed his subtle and introspective songs for a local following near his native village of Cueno, not far from the French border, until a French producer helped him produce a critically acclaimed album in 1995. You can hear his trademark gruff, whispering voice on two songs on Italian Cafe; one about the superficiality of fame and one which compares the flight of hot-air balloons to human relationships. The CD is rounded out by modern artists who are not retro in sound, but who cannot deny some heritage from their predecessors. Vinicio Capossela is like a Tom Waits of Italy, reminiscent of some unnamable era and with no hesitation in throwing in the sounds of toy pianos and chain saws. Newcomer Maria Pierantonia Giua makes her CD debut on this album. Meanwhile, Daniele Silvestri’s “Le Cose in Comune” (The Things We Have in Common) won Italy’s equivalent of the Grammy, as best song of the year. Over a jazzy bossa beat that echoes popular Italian music of days gone by, Silvestri sings of all of the 4,280 things he and his lover have in common.Austrian band Quadro Nuevo perfected their instrumental versions of popular Italian songs of the ’50s and ’60s by performing on the streets of cities across Italy. The instrumental they present here—Renato Carosone’s classic song “Tu Vuo’ Fa’ L’americano” (You Want to Play the American)—was one of Italy’s first world wide hits.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Putumayo World Music continues its exploration into the sounds of the Latin diaspora by releasing its first jazz-focused collection. One of the most familiar jazz genres, Latin jazz has achieved global popularity since big bands in the 1940s and 50s started incorporating Afro-Cuban sounds into their arrangements. This mixture of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz stylings comes together on Latin Jazz, a lively collection of songs by masters of the genre. Latin Jazz features legends Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri and others.

Аннотация к изданию (english)A remarkable revolution is taking place in Latin music these days, as electronica and remixing meet the more traditional rhythms of Argentinean tango, Afro-Cuban son, Brazilian bossa nova and Colombian cumbia. On Latin Lounge, artists such as Sidestepper, Si*Sé, Charanga Cakewalk and others prove that there can be a magical blend of modern musical trends and traditional Latin styles.Among the better known groups featured on Latin Lounge is the UK/Colombia/Cuba collective Sidestepper, renowned for fusing electronics and traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms.Their featured track, “Dame tu Querer”, is a dub-flavored love song recorded in Havana with Cuban vocalist Ronald Infante.Exclusive to Latin Lounge is a previously unreleased remix of Si*Sé’s “Mariposa (en Havana).” Says lead singer and co-founder Carol C., “We’re a band from New York City and we try to combine all of its musical traditions including hip-hop beats, Latin rhythms and down-tempo electronic music because that’s what we hear every day of our lives.”While Latin Lounge features several internationally known artists, it also highlights discoveries such as Bebe, a singer-songwriter whose recent collaboration with electronica DJ Carl Jean has made her a star in her native Spain. Another rising star is the Spanish band Amparanoia, a leading band in the mestizo (mixed) movement, so-called for its boundary-crossing blend of flamenco, Afro-Cuban music, hip-hop, electronica and other influences.Roberto Poveda, a Cuban musician and composer based in Miami is a new voice whose subtle updating of traditional son will be heard by a wide audience for the first time on Latin Lounge. From Argentina come Andrés Linetsky and Federico Aubele who, along with Italian duo Alacrán, are each taking the tango-electronica fusions pioneered by Gotan Project in exciting new directions. Two Europe-based Brazilian artists who make an appearance on Latin Lounge are Luiz de Aquino, who comes from São Paulo by way of Paris, and the eclectic Wagner Pa & Brazuca Matraca. A Rio de Janeiro native who has lived in Barcelona for more than twenty years, Pa mingles his own polyglot influences with the help of Spanish, Argentinean and Venezuelan musicians.Rounding out the surprises on Latin Lounge are the updated cumbia and mambo flavors of the Austin, Texas group Charanga Cakewalk, and a refreshingly unexpected track in which Mexican singer Adriana Castelazo joins with alternative healing guru Deepak Chopra to give a seductive Latin remix flavor to lyrics based on ancient Indian love poems. On the Putumayo collection Latin Groove we explored the upbeat side of this trend. Latin Lounge continues the journey, this time uniting tracks with a more chill out vibe. Latin Lounge is the latest in a series of successful Putumayo releases focusing on exciting new directions in down tempo electronica and world music that includes the collections World Lounge, Euro Lounge and Sahara Lounge.

Аннотация к изданию (english)Labels run the inherent risk of trivializing or marginalizing a region's music when they attempt to create a compilation. And yet Putumayo, which has made a musical-lifestyle name for itself by producing a bundle of these types of collections, does itself mighty proud with Louisiana Gumbo. Drawing from various statewide sources and time periods, Gumbo celebrates rather than appropriates. Merging blues, jazz, Cajun, and Creole influences along with country-inflected rock, R&B, and piano in the styles of boogie-woogie and fast-pumping Ferriday chording, this group of selections is a magnificent representation of some of Louisiana's smartest and tastiest offerings. From zydeco king Clifton Chenier to ivory tickler James Booker and Tipitina regulars the Neville Brothers, Gumbo is served up dirty, dark, and delicious. Husband-wife duo Carol Fran and Clarence Hollimon rear back to holler and hammer through "Door Poppin'," Eddie Bo puts bad-ass funk and swing to "Piano Roll," and Johnny Adams's "It Ain't the Same Thing" is as fine as swamp-rompin' R&B gets. --Paige La Grone
