Move over Yusef Lateef, Joe Henderson or just about anybody out there who you think of as an innovator for combining Jazz with Eastern elements. Before it became 'a thing,' Lloyd Miller fused real Jazz with Asian sounds. During his extraordinary life, Miller has been an extensive world traveler, multi-instrumentalist on dozens of exotic and Western instruments, fluent in multiple languages and at one point, he was even the host of a Jazz program on Iranian television. Miller didn't just have a curiosity for things Oriental, he lived in Iran for years, studying Persian music. The strangest part of Miller's story may be that he's a Mormon who made Utah of all places his base of musical operations. While Lloyd Miller has released dozens of albums, none were through big labels. It's not until very recently that most of us have even had a chance to know about the work of the Ethnomusicologist Jazzman. Introducing "A Lifetime in Oriental Jazz." This is a compilation of highlights harvested from the Miller archives. While the time line ranges from 1961 to 2005, most of these recordings are from the early 60s. 'Gol-e Gandom' starts like a piece of classical Persian music. Before long, the composition is taken over by a straight Jazz quartet that soon incorporates the beautiful sounds of the santur. 'Gözel Güzler' is threaded with a clarinet that imitates the Turkish zurna. 'Bizz-Aire' is bop that features the African balafon. Utilizing multitrack technologies, Miller plays half a dozen instruments on version two of 'Gol-e Gandom.' Beginning with tablas and Indian chanting, 'Indo-European Improvisations' is a twelve minute piece with lovely piano work that plays well with the santur. As with most of this music -it embraces an element of the exotic yet it still swings. Moving further East, 'Hue Wail' features Miller on a Vietnamese plucked zither called the dàn tranh. While 'Chant Inca' moves into Africa, the musical landscape shifts to India for 'Impressions of Bhairava Raga' and 'Khamaj Curry.' While "A Lifetime in Oriental Jazz" features plenty of improvisation and modal exploration, the result is always listenable. This music is sure to resonate with listeners that have an interest in both World Music and vintage Jazz. Indeed, Miller does not play Martin Denny style Exotica; this is serious Jazz with an open mind. While Miller is a worldly man who channeled so much of the planet through him, his work has until now been inaccessible to much of the world.
