Blue In Green.wav" WAVE INDEX 01 00:00:00  Об альбомеWhat would a celebrated Mexican-born vocal stylist and a world-famous Spanish Flamenco guitarist sound like in a duet?Like Magos Herrera and Javier Limón in their first album together, Dawn. Splendid. Breathy. Voraciously spacious. Yup. All first impressions of this upcoming, June 3rd release on OKeh Records.Coming together to do this album was a no-brainer for the two consummate professionals. They each admired the immense work of the other. “Something that we share is that we do believe that music can be inclusive,” Herrera said. “So this means that you can have a Latin jazz singer singing with a Flamenco guitar player…. It’s been an incredible learning experience to see how he works as a producer, and for me to share and be able to create new music together.”Limón has worked with a plethora of international artists and created a solid foundation of culturally inclusive fusion music on his own record label, Casa Limón. Working with Herrera came naturally. “I really appreciate a singer like Magos that has a great voice, great rhythm, and a great sense of musicality. She has a big heart with a lot of knowledge. The album, if we have to choose just a few words, is about sound, about rhythm, about loneliness, about emptiness, about voice, heart, guitar, and silence.”Herrera’s international success — she’s a household name in her native Mexico City, and fast becoming one in her adopted New York City — plays heavily in the cross-cultural fusions required of a mixed-instrumental, Latin-jazz project such as this. Her adaptability in the vast realm of modern-jazz plays well in the collaborative process with Limón, a giant in his industry, and quick-silver in his adjunctive performances.Theirs is a Dawn worth getting up for. Her throaty balladeer with his syncopated Flamenco beats and claps, and that romantic string-caress set such a sumptuous, carnal, driftwood mood. They cover Miles Davis’ “Blue In Green,” Johnny Mercer/Hoagy Carmichael’s “Skylark,” Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue,” Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “O que tinha de ser (What Has To Be),” and Nat King Cole’s hit song, “Nature Boy,” as gustily as their own luxurious compositions. The full effect is that of setting sail to far-off, exotic locales, leaving cares and worries behind.Herrera’s own natural, intuitively inclined pursuit of things of the heart leads the thematic discussion of this album. As big as she is in Mexico City, with her own TV show there, and her own radio show, La Vuelta a La Manzana, here, Herrera doesn’t act like a big deal. She’s completely accessible to fans on- and offline, drawn by the emotional connections, and the belief that people are of one heart, not separate entities. That belief seeps into the tone and feel of Herrera’s warm, enfolding, breathy caress with each savored note. “What drives me as an artist is life itself of course and the way I need to express my perception of it,” Herrera said. “In a more practical level, living in New York is so inspiring, you get to know so many amazing artists sharing their visions with so much passion and [surrendering to] that makes this path a wonderful experience.”Herrera simply redresses tired jazz covers with that velvet and diamond voice, as Limón quietly moves her building urgency along with every stroke, squeal, and those truncated, placating beats that take the listener somewhere else. Many have covered “Nature Boy” with Latin beats in mind. But none perhaps more eloquently and authentically than Limón’s fine-fingered-flickers and unison claps amidst Herrera’s phrasing overhaul, redirecting certain familiar lyrics to suit her own non-traditional, non-American interpretation, always in a downward, harmonically-sympathetic slant.“Skylark” is a completely different song altogether when Herrera sings it, bordering that deeper, harmonic register, daring the melody to follow suit. She changes the sweetness and light of this standard into a sexual invitation, full of dark, but true possibilities. The opening number, “Afro Blue,” assures the listener this isn’t the typical path through American and Latin jazz composition by any means. As soon as those claps beat out a synco-funk introduction, Herrera and Limón are in their own element of suave and sophisticated, heat and seduction. They’re so good at wrapping vocals around Flamenco, without displacing the odd, rhythmic, very Latin clap-beats, it’s mind-boggling, and fantastically misleading.Herrera and Limón’s covers are a cut above. But their original compositions? Forget it.“My Love For You” by Herrera and Limón is such a perfect rendition of what these two artists can do together. The arch of a bow and arrow plaintively wailing in the night, Limón’s hesitant but note-abiding tracking, and Herrera’s explicit vocals barely clutching remnants of demure camouflage… all converge to hit the fevered climax of “Take me.” That breathy lick and smoke finale is perhaps the most seductive climax to any slow-burning instrumental.“Dawn” starts off simply, Limón fixating on a handful of notes over and over, as Herrera finds her course, filling the voice and solitude in her own furtive and lapsed cadence that’s quite charming and exotic. Then, Limón punctuates each lyrical run by Herrera with his guitar string squeal in a way that’s disconcertingly, profoundly orchestral-original. All their songs are hard to resist. But this one kept coming back, the spare music and lyrics spinning in a kind of subconscious mantra for the soul, especially in the mysteriously fulfilling refrain at the end, “No one but you, no one but you… knows about me.”When asked, Herrera pointed to the sea as her point of inspiration. “I wrote some verses over this bass line on the plane going to Madrid to record the album, wondering [about] the virtue of letting go as an act of love, detachment, acceptance, but still deeply committed to the other’s destiny. Once I was at the studio, I played it to Javier, who came up with the B part. Sounded beautiful and we recorded it right away and [it] became the single.”As a musician first, Limón hears the juice of the notes differently from an average listener and most vocalists. For him, the contemplative, gentle tide of “La Llorona” felt unreal to play in the studio. He recorded it in the first take, maintaining both the quality and the emotion of the piece. “The recording is a real first take. I mean that, not only was [it] the first time that we recorded that song, it was the first time that we played it together. A masterpiece of emotion.”Of course.
