Billy's Best! was his new label's way of showing faith in the great crooner, that he could fashion an album of songs that would work as a whole - as the LP format had become dominant in the industry by 1957. The prevailing mood of the songs is romance with touches of mystery and melancholy. And with the words of such master lyricists as Irving Berlin, Lorenz Hart, and Cole Porter, and tasteful big-band arrangements by Henry Mancini and Pete Rugolo, Eckstine's rich baritone consistently smacks of sophistication and craftsmanship.
