Although similar in appearance to the Xylophone and Marimba, the Vibraphone has a sound and character all its own. This tuned percussion instrument has a wide range of three or more octaves. Its' exact range may vary slightly according to the different builders. The vibraphone has a piano-like keyboard, with two rows of aluminum bars instead of a keyboard. These aluminum bars are struck with mallets, sometimes called beaters. Underneath each of these aluminum bars is a hanging metal tube that vibrates (vibes) each time the bar is struck with the mallets. In addition each of these metal tube resonators under the bars also has a paddle fan shaped device which turns (opens and closes) via an electric motor and thus produces a wavering of pitch rone, thus increasing rhe vibrato-like sound. Also like rhe piano, rhe vibraphone is equipped wirh a damper operated with rhe foot, which can stop a note and chord when something new is to be played. Although the vibraphone was first introduced as a jazz instrument, it has since had many classical works wrirten for ir, and because of its wide range, adapts and blends well to almost any musical medium. Joe Roland, son of the Hotel Savoy's chiropodist, was born in New York, and like so many other vibraphone players started his musical life srudying the piano. Later however, being influenced by Benny Goodman, he decided to take up the clarinet and while at the Juillard School of Music (1937-1939) he majored in clarinet and minored in piano. During his military indenture in the army he had an opportunity of becoming acquainted with both the vibes as well as xylophone. It was not until 1946, and civilian life, that he took up the serious study of rhe vibraphone and made rhe instrument his own. Joe has played wirh Oscar Pettiford as well as contributing to rhe unique sound of the George Shearing Quintet. Remember how popular rhe Shearing Quinrer was, and how rhe vibraphone simply made the unique sound of that group? He has also worked wirh Artie Shaw. One of rhe rhings that impresses me most about Joe's playing is his ultra-smooth connected style and the fact that he never loses sight of the melodic line. Roland is an innovator... even his wonderful early Savoy sides demonstrate this. Joe Roland's Bethlehem LP (BCP #17) was produced and recorded monophonically by Creed Taylor in New York on March 25rh, 1955. The engineer was rhe legendary Rudy Van Gelder. The quinrer really shines with rhe Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh standard "Sweet Lorraine". Roland's original composition for this LP called "Goodbye Bird", with its recurring theme, merits mention. Fine playing from rhe guitar of Dick Garcia as well as pianist Freddie Redd. The performance standout of Roland on this CD, and that I want to draw your attention to, is the utter rour-de-force performance of rhe grear standard "After You've Gone". This track is a real model of true vibe virtuosity. The mallet work is incredible. Also listen to Joe's highly inventive and atmospheric opening and closing to the Green/Heyman chestnut "I Cover rhe Warerfront".. artistically making full use of all vibe effects. There is far too little regularly-recorded solo material of rhe vibraphone and so this classic re-issue from rhe vaults of Berhlehem is most welcome, especially when rhe playing is so distinctive and original. Joe Roland recorded for other labels. I urge you to seek out his other sessions.
