On the Sunny Side of the Street (Fields-McHugh) - 2:29 Art Tatum - pianoRecorded in New York in 1935-1943.  Review by Ken DrydenThe incomparable pianist Art Tatum is showcased in this brilliantly remastered two-CD set that collects 65 songs originally recorded for broadcast use by Standard Transcriptions between 1935 and 1943, adding [four] songs omitted from an earlier CD reissue by Music & Arts ("Body and Soul," "Can't We Be Friends," "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues" and "Stay as Sweet as You Are," though only 61 are listed in the booklet). Even though Tatum had made his commercial debut as a soloist only in 1933, the 26-year-old pianist's technique was already formidable by the time of the first session, which not only includes his dazzling interpretation of "Tiger Rag" and an intricate arrangement of Earl Hines' theme song, "Rosetta," but also Tatum's own "The Shout," a showstopper that would give any stride master a run for his money. The second date finds the pianist delving into much more familiar music, including "The Man I Love," the somewhat relaxed "I Can't Get Started," and Fats Waller's playful "Ain't Misbehavin'." There is also no shortage of breathtaking performances, with tour de force interpretations of Massenet's "Elegie" and the oldie "Happy Feet." The 1939 session has the most familiar material, with virtuoso performances of "Get Happy" and "Begin the Beguine," as well as a dreamy (if busy) "Over the Rainbow." The final session's exact date isn't certain, though it was made prior to January 16, 1944. Its highlights include a swinging "Body and Soul," a rollicking "Limehouse Blues" (incorrectly labeled as "Limestone Blues"), and a remake of one of his earliest recordings, "Tea for Two." The music within this collection has been reissued many times in different groupings by various labels, but this is easily one of the most thorough and best-sounding editions available. Highly recommended.
