The trio behind the moniker aren’t sisters, but singer/songwriters Inara George from the Bird and the Bee, Becky Stark, from Lavender Diamond and Eleni Mandell, and have put together an album that looks to old-style country and gospel music. Released yesterday, this album has a very easygoing, very cool feel to it that warrants a bit of attention. Opening with How Are You Doing?, the record starts with a complicated set of vocals, with each of the women weaving in and out amongst themselves along with a flowing beat. There are a lot of influences to their music here, and while some records that really look backwards are hampered by that, putting themselves into a creative corner, the Living Sisters really excel here. Other songs, such as Ferris Wheel and Good Ole Wagon demonstrate their country roots, laced with a real smoky feel, while Hold Back and Double Knots have a much different feel, almost like something that wouldn’t be out of place in the 1950s. The song content ranges a bit between some more romantic and evocative songs, although there isn’t that much subtlety when it comes to some of the songs – You Make Me Blue and How Are You Doing? Are two pretty good examples of this, and it is great to see some songs that really make no pretense as to what they are. The real focus with this album is the three singers, and this is where the album is really exceptional. I have a difficult time telling which artist is really taking lead with different songs (I have a feeling that they’re switching off), but as they do so, they all contribute to the lead and background vocals in a really complex and rich way.
