Мать руководила хором, брат — профессиональный контрабасист, сестра — учительница музыки. Начал выступать в группах ритм-энд-блюза, в 1951–53 играл в филадельфийском клубе Blue Note, аккомпанировал всем приезжим музыкантам, в том числе Чарли Паркеру, Майлзу Дэвису, Сонни Ститу, Аните О’Дэй. В Нью-Йорке в 1955 некоторое время работал с Майлзом Дэвисом, а затем занял место умершего Бада Пауэлла в квинтете Макса Роуча (пластинка Max Roach Plus Four, 1956). В 1956 организовал трио, с которым в течение двух лет пела Кармен МакРэй. В 1958 присоединился к ансамблю Диззи Гиллеспи. В дальнейшем в основном играл в клубах Нью-Йорка, его партнерами были Сонни Роллинз, Чарли Шейверс, Коулмен Хокинс, Клиффорд Джордан, Рой Элдридж, Джонни Гриффин, Бенни Голсон и другие.
