BookletOriginal liner notes from the Jazzland album "Blue Vibes" (R 922)The swinging and exceedingly earthy sound of Blue Vibes, which gets this album under way, will undoubtedly be for most listeners their first exposure to JOHNNY LYTLE. But unless we are very badly mistaken, those first-time listeners will be hearing a lot more of this tough-looking and tough-playing young vibrist from now on.A young veteran of, for the most part, the Eastern club circuit, Johnny has steadily built for himself a loyal following among hard-to-please audiences. At such spots as (for example) the Club Baby Grand in Wilmington, Delaware, his group has been repeatedly brought back by (as the saying goes) popular demand. Now, with his first appearance on records, Lytle is making his bid for wider recognition, looking perhaps to justify Lionel Hampton's enthusiastic comment, the first time he heard Johnny, that this is one of the greatest vibes players on the scene today. It's not too surprising that Hamp reacted that way, for there is a wealth of fire and swing in Lytle's music that seems as likely to appeal to the insider as to just plain foot-tappers. There is also a considerable dose of what, these days, gets to be called "soul," most notably in evidence on the two original Lytle blues tracks: the LPs title number, and Mister Strudel. It is also an important element in his very personal, very funky Autumn Leaves (a version that points up once again just how exciting it is to hear a fresh approach to an apparently done-to-death standard). The uncommon vibes-and-organ sound combination seems particularly well-suited to earthiness, but it turns out to fit every bit as well when Lytle is just pounding out a straightforward swinger like Milt Jackson's Movin' Nicely, or digging deeply into a rich ballad like For Heaven's Sake. One simple explanation for this may be the tight working unit formed by Lytle and organist MILTON HARRIS. Long-time friends (both grew up in Springfield, Ohio), they have been working together since 1957, with Harris being responsible for many of their arrangements and routinings. For this album, the trio is filled out by one of the top young drummers in the East, ALBERT HEATH, currently a part of J. J. Johnson's Sextet.Johnny Lytle began as a drummer, in a family band organized by his trumpet-playing father. For a while he was undecided between music and boxing. He was a two-time Golden Gloves Midwest champion (amateur record: 56 wins, 3 losses) and briefly a pro (2 wins, 1 loss)—after which he wisely decided for music, concluding that "I can beat the vibes all week long and they won't beat back.". —Orrin KeepnewsOriginal liner notes from the Riverside album "Happy Ground" (R 9470)The "Happy Ground" on which young vibist JOHNNY LYTLE and his colleagues stand is made up of just about equal parts of enthusiasm, skill, swing and soul. The combination, as you might expect and as you can certainly hear on this album, results in deeply earthy and highly exciting music.Lytle is a hard-hitting, firmly rhythmic musician, but he is also very much a melodic performer and a soloist capable of constructing consistently expressive and interest-building choruses. Another way of putting it is to note that Johnny has been strongly praised and encouraged by both Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton: which has to mean both that this young man really gets around on his instrument and that he covers a very wide musical range. This versatility, which shows itself clearly on Johnny's "Got That Feeling" album on Riverside, is again in evidence here in a repertoire that combines standards with a couple of notably soulful Lytle originals. The compellingly funky and blues-filled spirit of his own compositions (the opening track, Lela, which is named for Johnny's grandmother; and the album's title tune) actually does set the predominant note of the LP which also includes the gospel-imbued Tag Along, written by two friends of the vibist and which also manages to get a "down" feeling and a "church" chord or two into the lightly swinging versions of standards like It's All Right with Me and Secret Love. The mood gets down into ballad tempo for When I Fall In Love and Funny Valentine, on both of which Milt Harris distinguishes himself from the usual run of organists by helping to enrich the interpretation without getting into those syrupy sustained passages that make too many organists sound (to some of us longer-memoried folk) like the guy who played during intermission at those gilt-and-gingerbread decorated movie palaces that television put out of business. A razzle-dazzle treatment of Billy Strayhorn's Take the "A" Train, the only really up number of the album, demonstrates in conclusion that the trio can cook at the upper speed limits of their instruments when that's called for. This group is one with which Lytle has been touring the Eastern and Midwestern club circuit for some time, winning friends and return engagements just about everywhere. Some of his most notable triumphs have been in rooms well-known to performers as tough places to work because their audiences are knowledgeable, definite about their likes and dislikes, and not at all hesitant about letting it be known if they don't like your music - places like Count Basie's in New York; the Baby Grand in Wilmington, Delaware; the Sutherland Lounge in Chicago. (The last-named city in general, and the Sutherland in particular, can be considered the jumping-off place for the still-growing popularity of Lela, Johnny's best-known tune to date and one that a great many fans think of as his trademark.)Drummer "Peppy" Hinnant has been part of the trio ever since June of '60, but organist Harris has an association with the vibist that, in this era of quickly shifting lineups, is even more impressive. To begin with they have been friends almost as long as both can remember, having grown up together in Springfield, Ohio. In 1957 Milt, who had left music for a while, returned to hook up with Lytle and they have remained inseparable ever since. Much of the close-knit unity of the group can be credited to the by-now almost instinctive mutual understanding and anticipation of these two, as well as to that musical 'togetherness' that only much on-the-job experience can provide. The rest of their organized spirit comes from arrangements and routining provided by Harris.Johnny Lytle is one of those who have been involved with music almost literally all their lives, his start as a drummer coming in a family orchestra assembled by his father, a trumpet player. (A sister, Ada Lee, has begun to attract attention as a singer.) Twice a Golden Gloves boxing champion and loser of only three of fifty-nine amateur bouts, he did briefly consider a ring career. But three pro fights (two of them wins) changed his mind, as noted in a quote mentioned on the liner of his first LP but well worth repeating: "I can beat the vibes all week long and they won't beat back."The decision to limit his swinging to jazz was undoubtedly a wise move for Johnny - and surely a most enjoyable decision for the rest of us, too..
