It seems like ages since record companies had actual house producers, but Mesa-Bluemoon's Rick Braun seems to be gracing some of the label's most engaging projects these days. First came Willie & Lobo's worldbeat finesse, and now Avenue Blue featuring Jeff Golub, a snappy, fluid guitarist who takes the sharp lilt of Steve Laury into fascinatingly cool textures ranging from hip-hop to atmospheric new age with just enough jazz tradition infused to cross genres. It's a credit to Golub, in fact, that his wide palette of original compositions ring truer than do surefire soul covers like "Pick Up the Pieces" or "I'll Be Around." Braun (who adds his own trumpet flair) allows the sure-fisted Golub to be the star here, keeping the moods potent but slightly understated, even on the Tower of Power-like charts of the best cut, "Gimmie Some." The album's real charm lies in its shifting, unpredictable dynamics, as Golub attains out-there fusion textures just before softening to a Wes Montgomery-like solo pose on the soft-spoken strains of "Moon River." Definitely an auspicious debut.

Jeff and his band, Avenue Blue are back with their second Bluemoon recording, naked city, revisiting the soul, funk and blues stylings that peppered his acclaimed debut. Adding their talents to the project are guests Bob James and Phoebe Snow, plus a new band of New York musicians.' naked city' features thirteen tracks.....ten Golub - penned originals, plus remakes of such pop classics as "Baby I'm Yours," "Spooky," and "Wildflower." The goal of the new album was to capture the mood and spontaneity of a live club date. For naked city, Jeff and co-producer Rick Braun went into the studio with a full rhythm section and more. Only the horns and a few keyboard and percussion parts were overdubbed. A lot of the tracks were recorded on the first or second take. naked city juxtaposes fluid warmth and cool textures to create moods and atmospheres that both soothe and surprise !
Avenue Blue's Naked City is a laid-back, mellow jazz and soul fusion, highlighted by blues flourishes. The main distinguishing feature of the group is guitarist Jeff Golub, whose fluid playing dominates the record, even when he is accompanying such guest stars as Phoebe Snow and Bob James.

Jeff Golub is categorized in the smooth jazz genre because he's an instrumentalist; at heart, though, he's an Eric Clapton styled rockin' blues guitar player who, on Out of the Blue, finds himself stumbling happily into Tower of Power-like jam sessions. He pulls no punches from the start, rocking hard and furious with his distorted electric thrust darting around and over Ricky Peterson's brooding B-3 and a three-piece horn section on "Wanna Funk?" Jeff Golub is categorized in the smooth jazz genre because he's an instrumentalist; at heart, though, he's an Eric Clapton styled rockin' blues guitar player who, on Out of the Blue, finds himself stumbling happily into Tower of Power-like jam sessions. Soul Sessions presents Jeff Golub's attempt to recreate the '60s and '70s recording sessions where musicians played live together in the studio rather than the modern way of recording each separately. It makes for a more lively Golub album than usual and does overcome the overly slick and lifeless production that so many smooth jazz albums suffer from. But it's getting harder and harder to lump Golub with other smooth jazz artists as his albums become funkier and more soulful affairs than the competition offers. It's difficult not to think of late-period Wes Montgomery while listening to the opening "Boom Boom," and when Ricky Peterson's Hammond B-3 shows up here and there it pushes the album into the soul-jazz category. Soul Sessions mixes in some satisfying pop with a sunny cover of No Doubt's "Underneath It All," and the Golub original "Can't Let You Go," with Mindi Abair and Journey's Steve Perry guesting on vocals respectively. Marc Cohn's vocalizing on Jesse Winchester's "Isn't That So," and Luis Conte's focused percussion are also highlights. The album falls prey to smooth jazz's clichés only when saxophonist Richard Elliot sleepwalks through "Playin' It Cool," and Abair and Perry are given nothing more than their respective songs' titles as lyrics. Otherwise, the musicians' interaction is satisfying, but Golub's discography now just cries out for a live album.

Having explored a more organic '70s R&B sound on his 2003 release Soul Sessions, guitarist Jeff Golub returns to a more standard smooth jazz sound on Temptation. Still full of light but funky instrumental jazz, the album isn't as adventurous as his last outing. However, Golub is an adept improvisor and longtime fans should find much to enjoy here. Standout tracks include the Wes Montgomery homage "On the Wes Side," the mysteriously mellow Latin track "Metro Cafe," and the Sade-esque "Simple Pleasures."

A staple of the smooth jazz format since the mid-'90s, the former sideman for Rod Stewart fills a unique rock/blues gap between the genre's overabundance of R&B-influenced saxmen and the cool, classy elegance of artists like Chris Botti. Though fans mostly saw him out there on the Guitars & Saxes Tour or on countless smooth cruises, Jeff Golub spent his down time at home in N.Y.C. seeking out local clubs where he could jam with his buddies and break in some new material. Fashioned as a celebration of both the loud and subtle conversations between workaday New Yorkers, Grand Central found Golub happy in the midst of his adopted hometown, jamming hard and fast as if the subway's doors are closing and he's just about to jump on or off. He plays it mostly fast and funky, but shows a unique emotional depth by making his guitar gently weep on a nice cover of "Somethin".

Guitarist Jeff Golub has long mixed his soulful crossover jazz with a healthy dose of modern electric blues. However, he's never devoted a whole album to the kind of greasy rocking blues that makes up his 2009 effort Blues for You. An assured fret-wiz with a knack for juicy, well-tempered jazz licks, here we find Golub going for more of a laid-back shuffle and rocking twang that is more Stevie Ray Vaughan than George Benson. Joining Golub are a bevy of unexpected, but no-less blues familiars, guest vocalists most likely culled from Golub's time in the pop world backing Rod Stewart. Included are such names as Tom Waits, Marc Cohn, and even '80s rocker Billy Squier who shows up here to help Golub rework his classic hit "Everybody Wants You" into funky, Southern-blues drawl. The result works surprisingly well and overall brings to mind the earthy late-career efforts of Bob Dylan. Golub-himself has never sounded as muscular and assured as he does on such tracks as the shuffling jump-blues "Rooster Blues" which also features Peter Wolf sounding as inspired and back-alley slippery as ever. This album may be Blues for You, but it is clearly a work meant to please Golub's own soul as much as his audience's.

If one-time smooth jazz guitarist Jeff Golub got his feet wet in the blues world with his previous release, 2009's Blues for You, he jumps into the ocean on this follow-up. As its title implies, he covers the music of the three unrelated Kings of the blues; B.B, Albert, and Freddie. It's not exactly a unique concept, but it works as an excellent vehicle for the guitarist to strut his stuff. Even if some of the choices are on the obvious side (does anyone really need another version of "The Thrill Is Gone" at this point, even if this one is an instrumental?), he lets loose on solos with an edgy abandon that was only hinted at on the majority of his early, far slicker work. There is still a lingering polished quality to some of this, but the appearance of guest pianist/vocalist Henry Butler -- who also gets star billing on the disc's cover -- fellow jazz/bluesman Robben Ford, and slide wizard Sonny Landreth go a long way to making this Golub's most incisive guitar outing. Horns pop up occasionally, adding Memphis soul to "I'm Tore Down" and "Oh Pretty Woman," and a jump/big-band influence to "Everyday I Have the Blues." Butler takes the sound down to New Orleans on his original that sums up the concept in "Three Kings" as Golub adds fiery if short solos. The guitarist also contributes the self-penned "In Plain Site," a second-line beat-driven instrumental that gives him and Landreth room to stretch out even within its rather short three-and-a-half-minute running time. He also opens up on Freddie's "Side Tracked," tossing off Clapton-styled licks that are both fluid and sharp, then slows things down with "Freddie's Midnight Dream," a terrific and relatively obscure find that provides Golub with plenty of space to solo within its gospel-styled framework, providing what is arguably the disc's finest moment. Golub's an established pro, but with The Three Kings, he's expanding his vision into roots music that shows off his talents far better than the more commercialized approach he has built his reputation on.

If one-time smooth jazz guitarist Jeff Golub got his feet wet in the blues world with his previous release, 2009's Blues for You, he jumps into the ocean on this follow-up. As its title implies, he covers the music of the three unrelated Kings of the blues; B.B, Albert, and Freddie. It's not exactly a unique concept, but it works as an excellent vehicle for the guitarist to strut his stuff. Even if some of the choices are on the obvious side (does anyone really need another version of "The Thrill Is Gone" at this point, even if this one is an instrumental?), he lets loose on solos with an edgy abandon that was only hinted at on the majority of his early, far slicker work. There is still a lingering polished quality to some of this, but the appearance of guest pianist/vocalist Henry Butler -- who also gets star billing on the disc's cover -- fellow jazz/bluesman Robben Ford, and slide wizard Sonny Landreth go a long way to making this Golub's most incisive guitar outing. Horns pop up occasionally, adding Memphis soul to "I'm Tore Down" and "Oh Pretty Woman," and a jump/big-band influence to "Everyday I Have the Blues." Butler takes the sound down to New Orleans on his original that sums up the concept in "Three Kings" as Golub adds fiery if short solos. The guitarist also contributes the self-penned "In Plain Site," a second-line beat-driven instrumental that gives him and Landreth room to stretch out even within its rather short three-and-a-half-minute running time. He also opens up on Freddie's "Side Tracked," tossing off Clapton-styled licks that are both fluid and sharp, then slows things down with "Freddie's Midnight Dream," a terrific and relatively obscure find that provides Golub with plenty of space to solo within its gospel-styled framework, providing what is arguably the disc's finest moment. Golub's an established pro, but with The Three Kings, he's expanding his vision into roots music that shows off his talents far better than the more commercialized approach he has built his reputation on.

That guitarist Jeff Golub was able to record Train Keeps A Rolling at all is something of a miracle. In 2011, the optic nerves in the guitarist's eyes mysteriously and inexplicably collapsed, leaving him blind and in need of a guard dog. In September of 2012, while trying to catch the subway in New York, Golub fell onto the tracks as a train was approaching. He was clipped and dragged for a distance, but amazingly, other than cuts and bruises, he was unhurt. This makes the occasion of his 12th studio offering a special one. To mark it, his longtime co-producer Bud Harner suggested that he collaborate with one of his personal heroes, British keyboard giant Brian Auger. They enlisted drummer Steve Ferrone from Auger's Oblivion Express and bassist Derek Frank, who had also worked with the keyboardist. Various tracks are augmented by guests, including a four-piece horn section, percussionist Luis Conte, and vocalists Christopher Cross, Ambrosia's David Pack, and Alex Ligertwood (former Oblivion Express and Santana frontman).

After three acclaimed and popular Bluemoon/Atlantic albums with his band, Avenue Blue, guitarist Jeff Golub has decided to fly solo. "OUT OF THE BLUE" finds Golub stepping out front with an all-new collection of progressive blues-inflected instrumentals, fit to burst with funky Latin-tinged rhythms, soulful melodies and dramatic arrangements. Tracks such as the smokin' "Lucky Strike" and the sleek and sultry single, "The Velvet Touch," display Golub's ever-growing musical maturity and offer ample proof that he is one of today's most inventive and graceful guitarists.
"I wanted to take a lot more chances," says Golub, "so I decided to do it under my name to show that this is a different approach to the music. I didn't want to have any categorical limitations to where the music went."
Golub's stinging, swinging guitarwork is complemented by a stellar lineup of musicians that includes bass/Chapman Stick master Tony Levin (John Lennon, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), drummer Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty, Average White Band, Eric Clapton), Hammond B3 organist Ricky Peterson (David Sanborn, Robben Ford), and percussionist Richie Flores (Gato Barbieri, Eddie Palmieri, Hilton Ruiz). "OUT OF THE BLUE" also sees guest appearances from the saxman Kirk Whalum (on "Lucky Strike"), guitarist Marc Antoine (contributing nylon string guitar to "Paradise Lost"), and Golub's longtime friend and collaborator Rick Braun, who lets fly with some sizzling solo trumpet work on the cover of Dizzy Gillespie's classic "Manteca."
"I put together my favorite band," Golub beams. "They're just the ideal bunch of players for this music, and this is definitely player's music."
Golub co-produced "OUT OF THE BLUE" with keyboardist/producer Philippe Saisse (David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross), who also co-wrote a number of the album's tracks. Golub first connected with Saisse on a 1998 package tour with Whalum, where the keyboardist immediately sensed that Golub had yet to incorporate a crucial portion of his sound into his recorded output.
"When I play live, my rock and blues roots emerge," Golub says. "It's a more dynamic approach to the guitar. Philippe saw this other side to my music that hadn't made it to my records, and he wanted to work with me on trying to bring that out."
"Manteca," like the reggae-tinted "Latitude 19," finds Golub adding a Caribbean-spiced flavor to his already diverse instrumental pallette. The rhythmic sound reflects the impact such artists as Carlos Santana have had on the guitarist's music.
"Style is formed out of influence and inspiration," Golub explains, "and I wanted to bring in some of my other influences. That's one of the reasons I wanted that Latin sound, with lots of percussion and groove."
"OUT OF THE BLUE" was recorded largely at New York City's Avitar Studios. In order to best capture the energetic sound he wanted, Golub cut the majority of the album's tracks live in the studio with just the core rhythm section of Levin, Ferrone, and Saisse.
"You can feel how we were communicating with each other," the guitatist says. "There was this incredible interplay between the musicians, which is the true essence of what jazz is supposed to be. Now, this is by no means traditional jazz, but I did want to keep that spirit."
"OUT OF THE BLUE" undoubtedly captures Golub and his compatriots' joy in making instrumental music with no visible boundaries. For Jeff Golub, the goal is always to move forward, to take his special brand of guitar music to the next unexplored level.
"It's really important as an artist to keep evolving," Golub says. "Too many artists play it safe, especially after they've had some success. I never want to recreate what I've already done. I always want to take my music to a new place, with no limits as to where it can go."
The New York City-based Golub's kinetic blend of blues, soul, rock, and jazz has made him one of contemporary jazz/blues' hottest artists. Born in Akron, Ohio, Golub attended Boston's prestigious Berklee School of Music, where he honed his considerable skill as a guitarist. In 1980, shortly after his arrival in the Big Apple, Golub was invited to join Billy Squier's band, a stint which saw the guitarist performing on several albums and three world tours. He soon became a highly-valued session player and sideman, working with artists such as Peter Wolf, John Waite, Tina Turner, Vanessa Williams, Ashford & Simpson, and Rod Stewart, with whom Golub worked for eight years. In addition to his session work, Golub found time in 1988 to cut his debut solo album, "UNSPOKEN WORDS," which was hailed by Guitar World as "smooth, versatile... full of taste and soul."
Golub left Stewart's band in 1994 to pursue his other musical interests, specifically the formation of his own contemporary jazz group, which he dubbed Avenue Blue. Their self-titled Bluemoon debut was an immediate success, both critically ("An elegant excursion into atmospheric, R&B-touched jazz," raved Jazz Times) and commercially, reaching the #2 spot on both R&R and The Gavin Report's contemporary jazz charts.
In 1995, Golub was hired by pianist Bob James for a week's engagement at New York's Blue Note, a gig which resulted in his being asked to tour and perform with James and saxman Kirk Whalum on their Grammy-nominated "JOINED AT THE HIP." The following year saw the release of the sophomore Avenue Blue album, "NAKED CITY," which featured appearances from James, vocalist Phoebe Snow, and a host of New York's finest musicians. In addition to ten Golub-penned originals, the album included surprising covers of such pop staples as "Spooky" and "Baby I'm Yours."
1997 saw the third Avenue Blue release -- "NIGHTLIFE" -- hit #1 on R&R's NAC/Smooth Jazz Albums chart, while the album's title track also topped the R&R NAC/Smooth Jazz tracks chart. Golub has also frequently collaborated with his Stewart bandmate, trumpeter Rick Braun. The two have co-produced all three Avenue Blue collections (which, of course, feature Braun's trademark hornwork), while Golub contributed licks and leads to Braun's 1995 "BEAT STREET," 1997's "BODY AND SOUL," and 1998's "FULL STRIDE" (all on Bluemoon).
"I wanted to take a lot more chances," says Golub, "so I decided to do it under my name to show that this is a different approach to the music. I didn't want to have any categorical limitations to where the music went."
Golub's stinging, swinging guitarwork is complemented by a stellar lineup of musicians that includes bass/Chapman Stick master Tony Levin (John Lennon, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), drummer Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty, Average White Band, Eric Clapton), Hammond B3 organist Ricky Peterson (David Sanborn, Robben Ford), and percussionist Richie Flores (Gato Barbieri, Eddie Palmieri, Hilton Ruiz). "OUT OF THE BLUE" also sees guest appearances from the saxman Kirk Whalum (on "Lucky Strike"), guitarist Marc Antoine (contributing nylon string guitar to "Paradise Lost"), and Golub's longtime friend and collaborator Rick Braun, who lets fly with some sizzling solo trumpet work on the cover of Dizzy Gillespie's classic "Manteca."
"I put together my favorite band," Golub beams. "They're just the ideal bunch of players for this music, and this is definitely player's music."
Golub co-produced "OUT OF THE BLUE" with keyboardist/producer Philippe Saisse (David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross), who also co-wrote a number of the album's tracks. Golub first connected with Saisse on a 1998 package tour with Whalum, where the keyboardist immediately sensed that Golub had yet to incorporate a crucial portion of his sound into his recorded output.
"When I play live, my rock and blues roots emerge," Golub says. "It's a more dynamic approach to the guitar. Philippe saw this other side to my music that hadn't made it to my records, and he wanted to work with me on trying to bring that out."
"Manteca," like the reggae-tinted "Latitude 19," finds Golub adding a Caribbean-spiced flavor to his already diverse instrumental pallette. The rhythmic sound reflects the impact such artists as Carlos Santana have had on the guitarist's music.
"Style is formed out of influence and inspiration," Golub explains, "and I wanted to bring in some of my other influences. That's one of the reasons I wanted that Latin sound, with lots of percussion and groove."
"OUT OF THE BLUE" was recorded largely at New York City's Avitar Studios. In order to best capture the energetic sound he wanted, Golub cut the majority of the album's tracks live in the studio with just the core rhythm section of Levin, Ferrone, and Saisse.
"You can feel how we were communicating with each other," the guitatist says. "There was this incredible interplay between the musicians, which is the true essence of what jazz is supposed to be. Now, this is by no means traditional jazz, but I did want to keep that spirit."
"OUT OF THE BLUE" undoubtedly captures Golub and his compatriots' joy in making instrumental music with no visible boundaries. For Jeff Golub, the goal is always to move forward, to take his special brand of guitar music to the next unexplored level.
"It's really important as an artist to keep evolving," Golub says. "Too many artists play it safe, especially after they've had some success. I never want to recreate what I've already done. I always want to take my music to a new place, with no limits as to where it can go."
The New York City-based Golub's kinetic blend of blues, soul, rock, and jazz has made him one of contemporary jazz/blues' hottest artists. Born in Akron, Ohio, Golub attended Boston's prestigious Berklee School of Music, where he honed his considerable skill as a guitarist. In 1980, shortly after his arrival in the Big Apple, Golub was invited to join Billy Squier's band, a stint which saw the guitarist performing on several albums and three world tours. He soon became a highly-valued session player and sideman, working with artists such as Peter Wolf, John Waite, Tina Turner, Vanessa Williams, Ashford & Simpson, and Rod Stewart, with whom Golub worked for eight years. In addition to his session work, Golub found time in 1988 to cut his debut solo album, "UNSPOKEN WORDS," which was hailed by Guitar World as "smooth, versatile... full of taste and soul."
Golub left Stewart's band in 1994 to pursue his other musical interests, specifically the formation of his own contemporary jazz group, which he dubbed Avenue Blue. Their self-titled Bluemoon debut was an immediate success, both critically ("An elegant excursion into atmospheric, R&B-touched jazz," raved Jazz Times) and commercially, reaching the #2 spot on both R&R and The Gavin Report's contemporary jazz charts.
In 1995, Golub was hired by pianist Bob James for a week's engagement at New York's Blue Note, a gig which resulted in his being asked to tour and perform with James and saxman Kirk Whalum on their Grammy-nominated "JOINED AT THE HIP." The following year saw the release of the sophomore Avenue Blue album, "NAKED CITY," which featured appearances from James, vocalist Phoebe Snow, and a host of New York's finest musicians. In addition to ten Golub-penned originals, the album included surprising covers of such pop staples as "Spooky" and "Baby I'm Yours."
1997 saw the third Avenue Blue release -- "NIGHTLIFE" -- hit #1 on R&R's NAC/Smooth Jazz Albums chart, while the album's title track also topped the R&R NAC/Smooth Jazz tracks chart. Golub has also frequently collaborated with his Stewart bandmate, trumpeter Rick Braun. In the '90s, guitarist Jeff Golub's blend of jazz, R&B, and pop earned him a reputation for being one of the edgier, more tasteful players in the crossover jazz/NAC/smooth jazz field. Although some of Golub's recordings were played on smooth jazz stations extensively, he was quoted as saying that he refuses to play outright elevator music; and, to be sure, Golub's solos give the impression that he is essentially a soul-jazz improviser at heart. The Ohio native (whose influences have included Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, and Larry Carlton, among others) is quite capable of playing straight-ahead bop; he certainly has the chops for it. However, Golub chose to focus on more commercial music and has a long resumй as a rock, pop, and R&B session player. He appreciates being compared to artists like David Sanborn, the Crusaders, Ronnie Laws, Joe Sample, and the late Grover Washington Jr.; that is, instrumentalists who can be commercial and groove-oriented but still have a jazz improviser's mentality.
