Joining Rollins are Jazz Messengers Art Blakey on drums and Horace Silver on piano, Miles Davis' favorite bassist Paul Chambers, the quintessential trombonist J.J. Johnson, and even Thelonious Monk himself. The tour de force in swing begins with a bang and doesn't let up until the last note has faded away. Rollins' own uptempo "Why Don't I" kicks off the session with a rhythmic jolt before his big tenor launches into a classic swinging solo followed by turns from Johnson and Silver and some heated exchanges with Blakey. The aptly titled "Wail March" begins deceptively with a street-beat groove before careening into several blistering solo choruses. Monk sits in for his own "Misterioso" and "Reflections," two quintessential works from this eccentric master that are given excellent readings here. The bouncing "You Stepped Out of a Dream" provides some tasty interaction between Rollins and Johnson. Finally, the lilting "Poor Butterfly" is a nice bluesy ending to this all-star session.     Dynamic Range Meter foobar2000 1.3.2 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 log date: 2014-05-21 08:56:45 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: Sonny Rollins / Vol. 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR12 -7.94 dB -20.76 dB 5:42 01-Why Don't I DR12 -6.76 dB -20.74 dB 6:09 02-Wail March DR12 -8.37 dB -22.80 dB 9:22 03-Misterioso DR13 -9.48 dB -23.64 dB 7:01 04-Reflections DR12 -6.47 dB -21.39 dB 6:22 05-You Stepped Out of a Dream DR11 -9.30 dB -22.36 dB 6:10 06-Poor Butterfly -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of tracks: 6 Official DR value: DR12 Samplerate: 2822400 Hz / PCM Samplerate: 88200 Hz Channels: 2 Bits per sample: 24 Bitrate: 5645 kbps Codec: DSD64 ================================================================================
