Review
The incredible flow of the 2 guitars on this album is 1 of the most incredible recorded musical documents ever recorded. The Ellis & Pass duo, with rather few appearances in its short career, usually began with Ellis on lead, Pass on rhythm, but then things were switched & Pass was on top. On special occasions the 2 would then shed Brown & Hanna for a number of rounds of free-swinging guitar sparring.
This album was recorded live at Concord Boulevard Park in Concord, Ca. 1973. It is a Master tape direct to DSD and DSD mix recording>
Amazon review by Douglas T Martin:
“Seven Come Eleven” was recorded at the Concord Summer Festival right after the recording of “Jazz/Concord”…… This recording captures 4 great musicians, all playing at their peaks, just jamming & having a good time. The set opens with a swinging version of Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” called out by Ellis to the band before they play. Between songs Ray Brown says he wants to play something fast; Ellis barks “Seven Come Eleven – right now!”, & the race is on – Ellis & Pass’ solo duets/duals bring loud responses from the crowd numerous times. With some occasional off-mic comments between the bandmembers & some question about the upcoming songs (did they even plan a set list?) this recording has all the fun & looseness of a live gig in a small club. No jazz guitar collection is complete without it.
SA-CD.net review by jimmyjames8 October 19, 2003:
Interesting & highly enjoyable jazz guitar duo joined by bass & drums. Live gig. Good sound. Rear channels in MCH dedicated to ambience, echo, reverb, audience & not much else. Guitar jazz in a similar style of Barney Kessel, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery. Short running time.
Musicians:
Herb Ellis - guitar
Joe Pass - guitar
Ray Brown - bass
Jake Hanna - drums
