This well-rounded set (released posthumously) features the highly influential pianist Bill Evans in a set of typically sensitive trio performances. With his longtime bassist Eddie Gomez & his drummer of the period, Eliot Zigmund, Evans explores such songs as “We Will Meet Again,” Jimmy Rowles’s classic “The Peacocks” & the “Theme from M*A*S*H.” It’s a solid example of the great pianist’s artistry. –Scott Yanow SA-CD.net review by analogue September 2, 2011: It amazes me that Bill Evans…just a few short years from his death was playing better & more beautifully as he got older. This Shm-Sacd is a perfect example. In my opinion it ranks as what may be his best playing ever. I consider this Warner disc to be a Dvd-Audio but I still give it 5 stars because both the music & the sound is awesome. It is so impressive how one’s emotions change from the different note-structures Evans plays. Evans note selection is much more complex here. A person can go through the gamut of his/her emotions pretty quickly listening to this album. Evans piano playing on this album is so musical & liquid…how he can bunch notes together so suddenly & then play other tonal colours….then slowing down the tempo….is truly amazing here. This disc must be played very loudly & the sound is wonderful. Sonically this disc can’t compete with the other tape to DSD discs but it still impresses never the less. The original album had 7 tracks but this Shm-Sacd has 10. The 3 bonus tracks are different in feel & don’t completely relate to the 1st 7 on the same emotional level but it does make for great listening & a longer playing time. Evans……hopelessly hooked on heroin & according to 1 friend…. committing the longest suicide in history manages to achieve masterful piano artistry of the highest calbre. A TRUE ARTIST. A truly great album and Shm-sacd.
