Nathan returns to his acoustic jazz roots with 'The Poet's Embrace', a quartet album of largely self-penned originals. It was recorded completely analog, straight to vintage Ampex two-track tape with no mixing or overdubs -- exactly how jazz records were made before the invention of multi-track recording.
'The Poet's Embrace' features one of the country's most esteemed pianists, Kevin Field (who also contributed a track), plus younger Auckland University graduates Alain Koetsier (drums) and Thomas Botting (acoustic bass).
With producer Mike Patto at the helm, 'The Poet's Embrace' exudes warmth and authenticity, and was recorded over just two days at Auckland's York St studios in December 2011. The album features an array of vintage Neumann microphones, vintage Neve EMI desk, a Steinway-D 12 foot grand piano (hired in especially for pianist Kevin Field), with performances captured as the band played them live in the same room.
After 25 years in the game, which has seen Haines master an incredible number of genres including drum and bass, broken beat, house and jazz electronic, what emerges from the tunes on 'The Poet's Embrace' is a sense of a musician who's gained his wings.
