It had previously been thought that Reggie Workman was the bassist on the December 21, 1961 session. However, after listening to those tracks in the late 1990s, Workman said he believed the bassist was Jimmy Garrison.
Tracks on Disc One are in their original-LP sequence.
Master numbers show the order in which the tracks were recorded.
All tracks, except the 45-rpm mono master take of "Greensleeves," were transferred from the original analog stereo tapes. No tape survives of the 45-rpm issue of "Greensleeves." Consequently, this track was transferred from a disc source and surface noise is audible. All transfers from analog to digital were made at 24-bit resolution.

How could this happen?
How could 8 analog (apes survive untouched all these years? When! put. them on the machine they played back as if I had recorded them yesterday. No oxide shed, no bad splices, no Dolby copies, no horror stories about record companies scrapping masters or losing them when the physical tapes were transferred from one owner to another.
The answer lies with Bob Thiele. He had been in the record business as a producer long before I met him. But he loved jazz. He understood the relationship between jazz music and big record companies. "Major corporations," he used to call them. He would joke with me about the role of the engineer: "Rudy, you know in Europe the recording engineers wear white coats." On another occasion he brought me a small book called How to Make Good, Recordings: The Complete Handbook-for the Everyday Recordist, published by Audio Devices, Inc. in New York, USA. They made recording blanks. Of course, he didn't know I already had a copy. 1 still have it.
During those 1961-62 sessions he had asked me to run two tapes simultaneously (big company, big budget).
After Coltrane died Bob came to the studio and said, "Rudy, I'm sorry. I have to pick up the tapes." I gave him the tapes and thought no more of it until this month. Now, years later, I realize that what he did was to protect the original recordings of Coltrane's music. Those simultaneous original tapes I made for him are still here. That's why we have them today.

Primarily recorded at two sessions in late 1962, early in the life of what came to be known as the classic John Coltrane Quartet, Ballads is one of the most unusual albums in the Coltrane discography. At the time Coltrane was best, known for the adventurousness and intensity of his music, but he had a tender side as well, and Ballads was the first album to put the lyrical aspect of his playing in the spotlight.
The first disc of this deluxe reissue consists of the album as originally released. The second contains a wealth of extra material from the Ballads sessions, most of it previously unreleased. Included are seven takes of "It's Easy to Remember," showing how the version that ended up on the original album took shape, and one piece - "They Say It's Wonderful," a duet with pianist McCoy Tyner - that was left off Ballads and has remained unissued until now. All the music on both discs has been remastered by the original engineer, Rudy Van Gelder, using better tape sources than any previous edition.

Throughout John Coltrane's discography there are a handful of decisive and controversial albums that split his listening camp into factions. Generally, these occur in his later-period works such as Om and Ascension, which push into some pretty heady blowing. As a contrast, Ballads is often criticized as too easy, and as too much of a compromise between Coltrane and Impulse! (the two had just entered into the first year of label representation). Seen as an answer to critics who found his work complicated with too many notes and too thin a concept, Ballads has even been accused of being a record that Coltrane didn't want to make. These conspiracy theories (and there are more) really just get in the way of enjoying a perfectly fine album of Coltrane doing what he always did -- explore new avenues and modes in an inexhaustible search for personal and artistic enlightenment. With Ballads, he looks into the warmer side of things, a path he would take with both Johnny Hartman (on John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman) and with Duke (on Duke Ellington and John Coltrane). Here he lays out for McCoy Tyner mostly, and the results positively shimmer at times. He's not aggressive, and he's not extroverted. Instead, he's introspective and at times even predictable, but that is precisely the draw of Ballads. In 2002, Impulse! re-released both Ballads and Coltrane, each with a bonus disc of mostly unreleased tape. The bonus disc for Ballads contains no less than five versions of "Greensleeves" and seven versions of "It's Easy to Remember," plus two alternate versions of other album tracks. While far too much for the casual fan, the more adventurous Coltrane obsessive will appreciate sometimes slightly more aggressive and exploratory versions of the aforementioned tunes. Even then though, the repetitive nature of this situation doesn't really lend itself to repeated listens.
