Harvie S has had a long and distinguished career. This fixture on the modern jazz scene, not just the first call scene in New York has had Harvie S on dates with Steve Kuhn and most recently Sheila Jordan. I had the pleasure of exchanging cyber pleasantries with the great bassist so when I had Witchcraft cross my desk with the great Kenny Barron holding court on the piano bench then I knew my musical easy button had just been pushed.
The duo of S along with Barron is not a new pairing as they released the stellar Now Was The Time on the Savant label in 2008. The passage of time and the development of the collaborative process has Witchcraft as a virtual book end to their previous work. One key to the success of this particular recording would be the uncanny ability of Barron to play "with" S and not around or behind the legendary bassist and this allows for that rare give and take where egos are checked at the door and the only guiding force would be the music itself. Versatility best describes Harvie S and his virtuoso talent as tunes from both S and Barron and mixed in perfectly with some more eclectic fare from such artists as Stevie Wonder and Eumir Deodato.
As stated in previous reviews, I typically cringe when instrumental titans decide to do a riff on a more traditional "pop" tune but the harmonic development of both pieces are strokes of musical genius. While Brazilian music happens to be a musical sweet spot for this critic, the Roberto Menescal/ Ronaldo Boscoli tune "Rio" allows S to show his immense lyrical drive on top of a hypnotic samba groove that stays with you. In keeping with the Brazilian vibe, the Barron tune "Sonia Braga" has a nice dynamic tension while the S original "Until Tomorrow" which Sheila Jordan recorded in 1986. The classically under stated Latin groove smolders just below the surface allowing for a pop of vitality and a harmonic texture that most duos would struggle on their best day to pull off. Harvie S swings like a beast and is vastly under appreciated, the bass field is crowded but this release should vault S straight to the top of the heap.
A rare and special recording that straight ahead aficionados will talk about for many years to come. While being a critic is far more than being critical, there is simply nothing negative to say concerning this release. (@CriticalJazz)
